Transfer case fluid

I know that the book says Dex II or III, but I've also seen that ATF+4 is fine to use. I changed mine last week, and used ATF+4. Whats up with the T-case seemingly being able to accept both types of fluid?

It's a chain and some gears - all it needs is something to keep things lubed a bit. I use whatever ATF is convenient and am running ATF+4 in mine now because I have it on the shelf.
'00 XJ - Somewhat modified
