Reasons why you should:
-Performance
-Longevity
-Reliability
-Resale Value
-Construction Quality

Shouldn't:
-Uhh...
-Umm...
-Maybe an irrational hatred of foreign cars out of some misplaced sense of patriotism to 'Buy American'?

Ok I can comment on this because I have had:

1982 4x4 standard cab
1985 4x2 standard cab
1987 4x4 standard cab
1993 4x4 standard cab
1995 4x4 extended cab
2005 4x4 extended cab

I have also had:
1999 Cherokee 4 door 4x4
1999 Cherokee 2 door 4x4
1989 Cherokee 4 door 4x4
2005 Wrangelr 4x4
1999 Cherokee 2 door 4x4 (same as above, i just bought it back )

Ok with that said, the good:

Toyota Good:
Great offroad (if you have a solid axle) IFS is only good for mild stuff
Reliability (but Jeep also has this)
Engine Life
I'm assuming you mean a truck, so you can haul stuff.
Good aftermarket support
Resale Value

Toyota Bad:
IFS
Always worry about a timing chain
Rust on older models is horrible
High initial cost, even the older ones bring big bucks around here.

Jeep Good:
Great offroad
Tons of aftermarket support
Cheap initial cost, (mainly Cherokees)
Very reliable
Long engine life
Can haul 4 people (assuming you meant a truck)
Can tow more and is more powerful than the common 4cyl.

Jeep Bad:
Heck I can't think of anything. After all look at me I've had tons on Toyotas and have moved on to Jeeps. All the Toyotas were in my early years the last few years have all been Jeeps.

Toyota trucks and 4Runners after 1985 are IFS. IFS is weak and does not offer a lot of articulation. A solid axle swap from IFS is a lot of fab work. Yota's are leaf spring at all 4 cornners which is strong and simple but provides a pretty rough street ride. The 22re 4 cylinder engine doesn't make much power. Late model V6's are better, but then you're back to IFS or a SAS.
On the plus side, they do very well offroad. Dual cases is common and fairly easy to do. Stock toyota axles are strong and can handle 35" tires. TONS of after market support. Toyotas are ridiculously reliable. Lot's of built Toyota trucks selling for 5 to 8 grand.

I had a wagoneer. It was fairly reliable. I have an XJ that I bought for $5500 with 50K miles on it. Now it has 150K miles and it has few problems I can't fix. I have a Jeep CJ7 that I beat to death on difficult trails. It is fairly easy to fix too. I have a '96 toyota tacoma. It is not up to the 4 wheeling the jeeps will do because of the limited front suspension travel. But The ONLY thing I have had to do to the toyota is change the spark plugs one time. It has never broken anywhere other than a rear leaf spring that I broke by loading too much in the bed. Toyotas are by far the most reliable cars I have ever had in 34 years of buying cars.

My 1994 Toyota Extra Cab 4WD with the 22RE is by far the best vehicle I have ever owned. I bought it new and in 150k miles have repaired very few things. It still looks like great in and out. I have a buddy that has been hounding me for years for it. He offered me 7k for it last week..... Money-wise, I should sell it to him, but can't stand to part with such a great vehicle. Someone mentioned timing chains....it is true they are prone to break, usually after 100k in the 22RE. Knowing that, I replaced mine at 100k. However, if you get a later style truck, you will have a belt not a chain.

I rolled almost 300 thousand onto a '98 TRD Tacoma after SWEARING that all foriegn stuff was junk. I TRIED HARD to kill it, too.

Sold it with 298K to my best bud who runs it hard regularly. Overloaded, undermaintained, and it still looks and runs great. I am now a believer in foriegn stuff, I would buy one again if they werent so damned expensive to buy, even USED.

- But it's not a Jeep. This just like the Harley guys. You can buy anything else but it's still not a Harley. Or a Jeep. And the Jeep is a pretty damned reliable rig as well, and you can actually AFFORD a Jeep.

I credit own a Toyota to allowing me to be able to afford both Harleys and a Jeep. Not having to spend money all the time on my DD lets me spend more money on my toys.

But unlike Harley, Jeep doesn't make most of its money by selling mugs and kiddie leather jackets to mid life crisis guys!!
