Switch (factory?) under dash on XJ???

I know this might be a dumb question, but can anyone tell me what the mini toggle switch (with on/off badge) under the dash on the driver's side is for? I have a '88 and a '89 XJ and both have it. On the '88 it is just hanging under the dash and on the '89 it is mounted high up on the kick panel. I turned it on with the engine off and got 4 clicks in a couple seconds and then nothing. Makes no diff when running or not in either position. Does this possibly have something to do with command start? I don't have the remotes or manual so I don't know. Thanks in advance guys

Sounds like previous owner fitted an anti-theft switch/device or maybe changed the circuitry so the jeep could be "held" in 2nd gear. Try and trace the wires that connect to the switch and maybe the mystery will be revealed.

Sorry, I did'nt read your whole message properly. Can't be a security switch. Best still to back trace the wiring

May be a valet mode for a alarm system.

Do you know much about PO of the jeep? I doubt this applies to yours, but I notice I had a random switch under the steering column in my '97, turns out it was a police jeep and the switch was for extended idle, something about higher output alternator or something for running electronics. Very useful for running an air compressor off your car tho.
