Storage under XJ backseat

I'm looking to create a storage compartment under my XJ's backseat with about 3-4 inches of clearance all the way across. Has anybody done this before?

Yeah, what exactly are you planning? I've got my jack, bottles of oil and ATF, jumper cables, and an array of tools all stored under my seat as it is.

I plan on keeping a hunting rifle under the seat so that nobody gets any ideas while I'm at work or just on my way to the range.

Might want to check your local laws on that. I hear NY is pretty strict on their gun control.

AFAIK as long as its unloaded and I inform an officer if I'm pulled over, its fine. I may just buy a lockable box I can bolt to the cargo area instead.
