The only thing I'm lacking recovery wise is a rear point. I know I could just get a hitch, but I'm seriously dreading taking off the fuel skid, it was such a pain in the *** to get on (as I'm guessing I'll have to take it off because the hitch will mount to the same holes). Going forward I'm more than ok, I got bumper, winch and shackles, but nothing in the back. Until I can get a bumper, is there anything back there that's suitable to tug on? I'd prefer to not pull on the axle, and there's obviously no hooks. Any ideas?
Rear bumpers are not recovery points and the d-rings on them are nothing but show. A few companies make rear bumpers that bolt to the 8 facotry bolt holes as well as the frame rails as a hitch would. Thats the ONLY style rear bumper that should be used for towing. The 8 stock bolts are not enough to hold the bumper on under a tow load. I have seen them pull right out of the frame. There is another thread on here of a ZJ with the rear bumper/tire swing sitting on the ground about 4 feet behind the jeep with a strap through the d-ring hoops. Ifyou dont buy a bumper that bolts on with the 8 stock bolts AND under the frame like a hitch, buy a hitch also.
**** I actually saw that thread! That was crazy. Was a beef bastage of bumper too. Thanks for the heads up though. I've been lucky so far and have never had to have been snatched out from behind but I'm sure my times going. So it needs all 8 stock bolts for a d-ring hoop or a hitch ON the bumper to be worth a **** eh?
No it needs all 8 stock bolts AND rails that bolt to the frame with the hitch bolt holes. All built into the structure of the bumper. The stock 8 bolts wont cut it alone.
If you get stuck in the meantime, i have pulled plenty of cherokees out by their shackles. It's not the best option but gets you out in a pinch. I would definetly work on something more stout though.

Using the shackles or axles for any kind of recovery is just asking for trouble. Would you rather be four wheeling miles from pavement confident that you can get out of any stuck situation, or would you rather be unstuck and have a broken rear suspension miles from pavement.
Most receiver tow hitches fit over most skid plates.
If you don't have recovery points, you really shouldn't be off-road.

Eh, I have plenty of recovery points on the front. I'm rather careful about the fact I don't try anything wheeling that I wont' be able to winch out of. If the only way out is for someone to snatch from the back, i won't attempt it as of now. Soon as I get a rear recovery point... different story.
