Should I BUY this XJ

I am looking to buy my first Cherokee its a 99 with 150k miles rough country 6.5 lift, 35 in tires(35%), Ford a custom Ford 9 inch rear end, 4.86 gear, with Yukon 31 spline axles and a Yukon Grizzly Locker. Custom off-road bumpers, roof basket, brush guard and 8000 lb Warn Winch, safari snorkel.

The bad is that the exterior has been spray painted black, rear pinion seal leaking some, front diff low and dirty oil. Poping sound at times when you first start of and turn at same time(prob Locker), pulls hard to the right steering wheel of center while driving(alignement and possible stabilizer upgrade), excessice vibration at times(could be that tires havent been balanced) door lock actuators not working, and fuel pump starting to go out takes a few times to prime before it starts at times.

The motor and tranny felt good during the drive. Anyways he is asking $4,300 and just wanted to get other peoples opinions if it sounds like a decent deal or what would be a good price to ask for it or if there is anything else I over looked or need to factor in cost, thanks for the help

would post pics but still trying to figure that out lol

I would say more then the 2500-2800 range honestly. Sounds like it was poorly maintained, needs new bushings(clunk when you start -stop),
new tires(1200 or so right there)
a pinion seal is not cheap if you have a shop do it(3-500+-).

Sounds like it doesnt have a SYE and probably has the stock driveshaft(500-700 for both) causing the vibrations.

He could probably get 4300 if it looks real nice form some kid that knows nothing about jeeps, but id stay away from it.

If i was him I would dump 3-500 into it with new bushings/seals/allignment. Then try to sell it.

just my .02

My Jeep is stock but from reading a lot on the subject it sounds like the lift is really high and folks on here constantly warn about poorly done lifts being constant trouble. Maybe a stock Jeep would be better and you do the lift yourself. Sounds like he abandoned the front diff fluid, not a good sign being so easy to check. I wonder did you pull the dip stick?

I forgot to mention it has SYE and custom drive shaft, oil looked like it had been changed recently and trans looked normal, air filter was newer, didnt hear anything adnormal with engine, just when turn on ac squeal for first 3 min ac on, belts looked fine, he said he would take 3500 bottom line,I know its not perfect but at 3500 is it something to good to pass up as far as aftermarket stuff on it?

If you have plenty of funds set back it may not be too bad, but fixing other peoples work (or lack thereof) will nickel and dime you to death. Its best to pick a solid Jeep to build from than to pick a built one that needs to be gone through. Re-work is no fun.

I dunno, sounds like alot of work to me. Asking price is to high for something that needs a lot of work done on it. Unless you know how to do most of the repairs yourself I would stay clear of it.

Thanks for ur responses, I planned on doing most of the work my self going to take it to a mechanic Tomrw for pre purchase inspection and see what the vertic is. I added up all aftermarket stuff according to 4wd catalog and it's over $4000 in mods so if it just needs mainly basic things to fix I may jump on it. The cherokees 97-01 around here in decent stock shape go for around 4-5k then I would have to add parts to build which would put me in the 7k + which is not happening on my budget. I don't need it as a DD just a weekend machine since I have a company car, so I am still weighing everything out.

If you arent afraid to get your hands dirty, id go for it. Id just at least like to have some automotive grade paint and not rattle can at that price even. XJ value is going up too, though. The days of buying a 1000 dollar XJ and being able to roadtrip it are all but gone.
