Rust Management 101

Alright guys and gals, i just bought a 96 xj country about 2 weeks ago and noticed that the belly of the beast has some rust issues that could become serious if not treated ASAP!

I hit the major areas for the time being with a couple cans of rustoleum rusty metal primer (and was considering buying a case of the stuff and completely covering the entire thing...).

anything better out there? rust is my #1 enemy right now....

when I got my 2k, rust was minimum, so just hit it with wire wheel then sprayed with Rustoleum bed liner then painted with rustoleum paint. Make sure ya don't coat important bolts and the such.

I live at the beach and the Jeep isn't kept in a garage so it's constantly in damp, salt air. I used Rust Bullet two years ago to undercoat it and has held up great. I highly recommend it.

Also a good idea to remove the interior to stop the rust in there too. My 96 has completely no floor in it because the windshield leaked for years before and while i owned it. But who needs floors anyways?

Is it just surface rust or is metal starting to flake off or worse make some holes?? Surface rust just needs to clean with a wire brush and some paint.

POR then Bedliner or 3M undercoat over it over it. I pour it in my doors to seal the pinchwelds

POR will NOT stick to clean metal but grips rust like crazy. Your local autopaint store will carry it.
A qt is about $45. I don't use the prep products they recommend. I've had mixed results when I have.
