Removing Front Drive Shaft = Improved MPG???

I own a 2004 Grand Cherokee Limited V8 and its all time all wheel drive. which sucks on gas mileage so i heard ppl are removing their front drive shafts and its improving the mpg. any reason why this is a bad idea if i dont need 4 wheel drive? im just a college student and i cant afford anything anymore it seems and ill be living in a city so i wont get to go wheeling like i would here in the mountains.

You may be in the wrong secetion but must cherokee SPORTS have the NP231 which is Part Time 4wd so it is only 4wd when you actyivate it. But that didn't answer your question.
