Rare junkyard find today...

Went out to the local salvage yard for a driver side vent window for my brothers jeep...(trail damage at dtor birthday bash.) as he's gettin that pulled I went lookin around and ran across an '87 and it had the d44 under it! Asked about it and they want $250. Worth it or should I stick with the original plan of swapping to the 8.25. I have the d35 under my '99 right now. Either way its a good upgrade worth putting money in but In the long run there is more 8.25 s out there.

For 250 Id probably go ahead and pick it up if it has the same gear ratio as your front.

DTOR huh? You from Kentucky too?

Can't load the pic on this thread but its on my registry thread? I'm about an hour north from dtor, Columbus, In.

Meh, you can swap an 8.8 for a comparable price and have a considerably stronger axle, disc brakes, more gear options, and limited slip.

cainxj99 04-16-2013 04:14 PM

Yeah the 8.8 would be a sweet but for a bolt in upgrade I was lookin at these two options. A welder is in the feature but I don't have one yet for the light fab work the 8.8 takes.

ibjeepin95 04-16-2013 06:58 PM

Yeah, 8.8 or Chrysler 8.25 29 spline is cheaper, 8.8 is stronger, 8.25 is just as strong. XJ Dana 44's are treated like gold and I don't understand why. I had one once in a 87' XJ. I feel they are overrated.

A built dana44 vs a built 8.25 is really user preference.

44 is stronger, maybe only slightly but it is stronger

Exactly, so it comes down to cost mostly.

egodfrey 04-17-2013 10:56 AM

up to 35s a 29 spline 8.25 and a D44 will both be just fine.

1990JEEPXJ 04-17-2013 01:38 PM

And the 44 has way more aftermarket support. such as locker options, gear choices, spline upgrades etc. and all at a cheaper cost too. Aside from the initial purchase price. Those are why I picked the 44 over the 29-spline 8.25 I had

dcorn 04-17-2013 01:49 PM

I'd say $250 is too much for a D44, but what do I know.

Says who? The internet?

I ran an 8.25 locked with stock shafts on 35's for years and never had an issue. If I decided to go bigger than 35s, I'd lose either one for a D60 or 9".

Find whichever is cheaper and has the gear ratio you want and swap it in. Gears, lockers and shaft options are basically the same and the same price. Swapping one for the other is pointless in my book.

And this proves anything how?
D44 has bigger tubes, more splines, and a bigger pinion than the 8.25. It's just a beefier axle, but not by much at all.

I can't see paying $250 though for it when you can get a 29 spline 8.25 for half the price all day long. You're not going to want to run anything bigger than a 35 on either anyway so it's pretty pointless to swap one for the other. Only time I'd bother with an XJ D44 is if I got one dirt cheap and even then I'd turn around and sell it because people think it's somehow the holy grail of axles just because it's rare.

$250 is a steal, well at least in my area. Around here junkyards would want that much for a dana35.
