Project XJ004 - Tire carrier

Ok, so wanted a tire carrier and couldnt find one that i could afford. Went to local Upick and found one for a bronco II

So needed to make a bracket to hold it, started with cardboard

worked with that, used 3/16 for the arms, and 1/4 for the base plates

My first weld

On the jeep

Modified bronco II bracket

Finished from side

and back

Looking good. I would totally try doing that, but I have a Gen 2, so the lines might be a little different.

I might try making my own when I get new bumpers, though.

That is a big *** tire on the back man

it looks good though.

I'm wondering if a Bronco tire carrier would be a pretty direct bolt on carrier. (minus drilling holes and all)

Looks good, hell it looks stock. How much did that cost you? And obviously you mounted it through the quarter panel, but I'm wonderin' if you reinforced the mounts? Not to put it down, put it seems that any tire over a 33 hangin' of could possibly bend the sheet metal.

My thoughts exactly, you used 3/16 plate to make the mounts then bolted it to 20 ga?

More pics of reinforcement please

The outside plates have identical matching plates on the inside, so the pressure is spread accross the whole plate, not just the bolt holes. mind you, if the door is forcefully swung open, as in someone pushing it real hard, im sure it would bend metal, but im fixing that with a small piece of steel cable from the bumper to the carrier.

The bottom mount holds more weight then the top one, also one of the reasons it is larger. the tire is a 32x11.50x15. the mount itself is a bit short to hold anything larger, but im going to 31x10.5 so will gain a half inch which will make the clearance perfect. the mount can hold a 35, as long as it is not wider then 11.5

the carrier is also getting a mount for a gerry can, so thats an additional 45 pounds when full, and as it stands now, wont be any problems.

The mounts for the bronco II and also the bronco are cast, no way to modify them to fit the jeep. already looked at that.

total cost:
$18 for carrier
$30 for sheet metal - includes the bottom mount bends
$6 for jigsaw blades to cut the arms
$2 for the liscence plate light. had to move plate to driver side (from center)

welder was a friends, so it was free

welp, got me worried now (tend to over think things some times)

so, decided to make a vertical mount to tie into the upper mount. make it about 6" long going up the C pillar. with braces that weld into that, and into the upper mount. look like a big L

thats the plan, havent taken off the interior molding to look at what i have to work with.

more pics later this week
