Project Poughkeepsie - 2001 Anniversary Edition Build Thread

As some of you may know I recently built a '98 Classic for my father and liked it so much I sold my '10 WK in favor of another XJ.

The WK build

The XJ build

For this project I was specifically looking for a low mileage sport with a 5spd and all power options with a straight body. Well I stumbled into a semi-low mileage '01 60th Anniversary edition with an auto and some dings and dents. But it was rust free and well priced so I jumped on it.

In short, the plan is to:
Repaint and armor the exterior
Reseal the 4.0L and swap in a NSG-370 6spd (already purchased one!)
Clayton long arms front and rear w/ coil conversion.
Axles/wheels/tires ect.
Modernize interior with seats/cage/stereo

I don't usually name my projects but seeing as everyone in the local Jeep club (and I'm pretty sure the entire state of OK) has a name on their hood/fenders... When in Rome. Its named after one of my favorite trails in the Ouray Colorado area: Poughkeepsie Gulch

Aries immediately tried to go for a Jeep ride:

Thank you craigslist! '13 JKR axles regeared to 5.13 with factory lockers and ARB diff covers:

Let the fun begin! I'll be prepping for paint first followed by drivetrain and suspension.

The dog is amazing... though not a good garage dog. He likes to be between me and whatever I'm working on at all times.

Quite a few of us doing that right now! LOL

I prepped the Jeep for a good powerwash:

Jeep, why you use so much 3M tape?! Luckily I have a 3M power eraser:

The engine bay look so much better!

5.9L hood vents will be installed like I did on my previous builds:

It does look like I'll have to replace the left rear quarter panel. I knew it had body work on initial inspection before purchase... Its bad enough that It'll be easier to weld in a new panel. Luckily I had experience with that on the last XJ project!

Sweet ride & I look forward to the information on the manual swap. The 3M erasure tool is great & really saves time with decals as well as adhesive removal.

Not much to report. I've just been tearing it down:

But the parts have been arriving!

NSG-370 w/ 231 and SYE already installed

I've always hated braking action with larger tires so on this build I went with the biggest brakes I could fit under 17" wheels

I'm going with AEV Savegres again

Hopefully it'll be ready for paint over the holiday break!

That NSG370 is the big brother of my NV3550 in my XJ. Looking great.

I just have to pull off the roof rack and then I can start sanding... And replacing the left rear fender.

Picked up a factory fresh OEM header panel in gel coat to replace the cracked one I pulled off.

I'm hoping to have it ready for paint by sometime next week. We'll see!

I'm so excited your building another cherokee. I loved the way your dad's turned out. What color are you painting this one? Are you running the Bushwacker fatties again or what?

I'm planning on going with BMW's Yas Marina Blue (B68):

And yup, it'll have Bushwacker flat flares. I'm a big fan of them! The build is going to be very similar to the one I did for my dad. It'll be slightly taller (Clayton coil conversion/long arm at roughly 5" of lift), slightly bigger tires (35's instead of 34's) and slightly wider (JK axles). The armor will be mostly JCR. I'm pretty excited to get the paint on so I can start on the manual swap and suspension!

I finally have everything (at least everything I'm going to remove for paint) off of the vehicle. Tomorrow I'll be welding up some of the miscellaneous holes and start prepping the left rear fender.

I can't wait to see that blue on the cherokee. You'll love the Claytons, I'm running them on my grand and there great. Are you going with the GY MTR/K or the Nittos? I just ordered Nittos and can't wait to get them. Keep the updates coming I'm a big fan of this build already.
