Got all the bracing done for my tire carrier tonight. Well, cut out anyway. Still need to touch up the edges with a grinder and weld them in tomorrow.

Also pay no attention to the gaps. That table is by no means level and I just set everything together real quick to get an idea of how it’s going to look and of course pictures for JF.

I'm so horny to make my tube flares this month, and tire carrier later this month that watching fabrication threads makes me salivate. I've got a 24' stick of 1.5" square tube just waiting.

Tomorrow I'm wheeling for the last time until my wife gives birth to our third ( Aug. 25 due date - she has some hang up about me dicking around in the woods 2 hours away with poor cell service ) so for the next 3 weekends it's do crap around the house and work on cosmetic parts of the heap. Next day out will likely be Labour Day Monday. Maybe I should also whip up a build thread to catch up on 2 years of homebrew while I'm laid up too.

Your carrier is looking good. Keep posting shizzat for us to see.

I'm heading to the JY to find a head for the Jeep tomorrow but after that I'll be going in to the shop to clean up the cuts and weld the bracing in. Shouldn't take all that long so I'll make sure plenty of pics get taken.

I've got just under 12' (might be 10', can't remember the length I ordered) of tube into it so far so not much, under 30 lbs.

1.75"x1.75"x.120 square tube is 2.66 lbs per foot.

The tire and wheel are going to end up weighing more than the carrier does.

Finished framing it this afternoon. I just couldn't get my *** in gear this morning and didn't get in til late so I've only had about an hour and a half to work so I didn't take very many pictures, though really there wasn't much to take pictures of without someone else there to take some while I was welding.

It's a little off, but I'm happy with it and it's going to be hidden anyway. Plus this is really the first thing I've actually built since I started welding other than some basic practice stuff. Speaking of practice I need to start practicing inside of 45s. This was the first time I'd done angles that weren't 90s and it shows, though they were getting much better by the time I got to the last couple. I'm also kind of debating taking some of the height out of it as I think it's going to sit up a few inches higher than I really need it to.

All I've got left now is to finish the bumper and order the hardware and it will be ready to be painted, powdercoated, or bedlined after I hit it and the outside welds with a grinder one more time. Haven't fully decided which to do yet.

Ordered a new cylinder head finally yesterday. $468 was hard to swallow on a $400 XJ but it'll be worth it once it's in. Should get here Wed, I'll actually have money again for gaskets on Friday and I'm going to try to get it in and finished on Saturday next weekend.

nice. have you fabbed up the rear tire carrier yet? hows it look? Or have you just been busy with work?

Also im curious as to how the MJ tube bumper looks on your XJ.

The frame is more or less done, though I need to grind down all the welds where they're sticking up in places the metal would otherwise be flush.

Though I am debating reducing the height and centering it. When I originally measured I wasn't thinking and measured the vertical bar for the full size of my tires, not half since it will be centered so I am thinking about cutting out part of the height and centering the whole thing instead of having it offset.

If I don't it will still be a few weeks before I can afford to order the mounting plates for the bumper and the hardware kit for the tire anyway.

yea you mightve over measured. but hey maybe just throw it on and see how it looks. if your tire sticks over the top of your roof id say thats no bueno lol

Good departure angle?

The biggest issue I have with crafting up a tire carrier is that I don't want to block the rear window or swing it open every time I need to unload something. It's the hockey trip vehicle all winter so I'd rather just leave it flat in the hatch with equipment on top. 33's still fit that way, but any bigger and it's going outside.

The bumper isn't any bigger than the stock one. I might lose a little but less than I would with a frame mounted hitch.

I tend to throw a lot of crap in the back so I don't want the tire taking up the room, plus I have an amp and sub and need the room for those.

The only thing I don't like about the A to Z kit is the t handle is threaded. I think I'm going to end up modifying it to have a solid piece go through with a hole for a quick pin so I don't have to screw it in and out all the time. I only have a 32 so it's not exactly necessary but I like the look and I wanted to do this for my first real welding project.

I plan on comp cutting it and totally redoing the rear end along with losing the hatch entirely long term anyway so it won't be on there forever anyway.
