New to the jeep world

I purchased my 1996 jeep cherokee last summer. I took it to school with me (in chicago) from my house in Houston, Tx. It basically made an 18 hour drive both ways plus my daily college driving. Once I got home and had everything inspected my mechanic suggested that I "do stuff" to my jeep. So I am asking what is the best lift kit, suspension not body, what is the right kind of tire for daily/trail driving and what would be suggestions to performance parts?

Congrats on your purchase, and welcome to the forums. You will find a ton of info in the Tech sticky located in the XJ tech forum.
Best this best that, depends greatly on your budget, also where/how you wheel, how big you want to go, tire size, mechanical ability, and so on...
Spend some time looking through the Lift thread to get an idea of what you might like. Talking with people in your area will also help in deciding what setups work under those conditions.

No body lifts are available anyway, as the XJ has a unibody
