New Guy, First XJ, Old Man Emu OME8402 kit question
 
Fellas:
I'm digging my way out of a maintenance hole with this XJ. Before I bought it, it had been rather neglected. I'm on to suspension work now. Three of the shocks are leaky and it's got a back case of saggy-butt. Since I need to replace this stuff anyway, I figured that I'd get the best parts available and do this job only once. It seems that the best deal can be had when purchasing the parts as a kit rather than going a la carte, so I'm looking at ARB8402. This kit is listed as a "light-duty" 2.5-inch lift. The ARB catalog lists one spring for the front, the 2930, but four springs for the rear: CS034RA and B, and CS035RA and B. Is there any way to find out which rear springs are in this kit? Does anybody have an experience with the OME Nitrocharger Sport shocks?

Let me saw you some hassle. Get either medium or heavy duty. I've heard some crummy things about the performance and longevity of light duty. And if I'm not mistaken they are the same price no matter what "duty".

OME Makes great lifts, and Shocks However Their Light duty springs are Eh. \ I also agree with looking into their Medium or HD springs . I would call up Dirk at DPG Offroad and talk to him he will get you set right

I have the medium duty springs, I would recommend heavy duty.

Exactly. And like I said, I dont think they cost anything extra. Why wouldnt you get HD? It only makes sense in the long run.

This is a good point, I do know on the YJ the HD springs have a softer rate until the overload spring kicks in then they stiffen up I am not sure if the XJ springs are like that but I wouldn't be surprised if they were

On my previous XJ, I had the light-duty springs on mine. I didn't want it this way, but that's what I got shipped and didn't want to deal with shipping back, exchange, etc. To counter the light-duty springs, I added OME-D22XL AALs in the rear. AALs were great, ride was still phenomenal, and no sagging occurred. If I had to do it again, I would've have sprung for the HD springs, but light-duty served me well. Here is a pic of it "loaded" and I was riding level.

Thanks. It went to a good home in SoCal. As you've experience before, I think it was one of your previous XJs, sometimes somebody shoots you an offer you can't refuse.

As an XJ novice, I really appreciate the replies. I will contact Dirk/DPG. He seems to be held in high regard around these parts.

I'm concerned about going too high with the HD springs, but I do understand the reasons to go that direction. I don't want to get into any slip-joint eliminators, longer control arms, or other such shenanigans. I suppose that a transfer case drop is easy and inexpensive.

MCObray, your old XJ is the suspension upgrade ("lift") that I'm going for; subtle with more function than form. Yesterday evening, I read a very long thread on your build of that particular XJ and I was very excited. I understand that you installed the OME transfer case drop on that one. Did you have any vibrations that indicated the need, or was it installed as insurance?

man I just looked through every picture in your album! Great looking 4.0! I have a 1994 Grand Cherokee that has a super clean body for the rust belt, but has 200k miles. It was mostly owned by an old lady, but then my high school friend owned it and I dont think he ever changed the oil. Im sure the motor will look similar to yours under the valve cover.

Well just wanted to say your pictures were an inspiration and you make it look easy. Im pretty excited to drive a stockish jeep again, my XJ was just getting out of hand for highway use.

No vibration. I installed the t-case drop just for insurance. I'm not out rock crawling so the loss of 1" ground clearance was not an issues for me. I had no vibrations and was well-beyond satisfied with the suspension. You could install suspension first and see if there any vibrations present. Every XJ is different. Some need a t-case drop at 2", some don't experience any vibrations with 3.5".

Think of leaf springs as a stick. If you notice, each spring gets shorter towards the bottom of the pack. Now tell me, is it easier to bend a long stick or a short stick? The bottom, much shorter springs are rated higher to withstand a load. Hence the name overload springs. The top springs are the cushion springs, so essentially all leaf packs are the same except for the load they are rated at, minus the fact that they are different in size and slightly different in spring rate.

Whelp...just got off the phone w/ Dirk @ DPG Offroad. He spent a good 25-30 minutes talking with me, and I went ahead and purchased one of his 2.5" OME kits. I added a steering damper and upgraded to the Sport shocks. ARB suggests removing the second leaf out of the CS033RB pack for the load rating/height I need. The front will use the standard 2930 with a 3/4" shim. Included in the kit are extended/adjustable bump stops, U-bolts, and adjustable Panhard bar. I'm somewhat nervous about spending this kind of cash for suspension bits, but I know that the parts currently on the vehicle need replaced, and OME is about the best one can get. Hopefully these are the last springs/shocks that I will need!
