*I got this one*

<rolls up sleeves>

WTF ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?

When you say JY do you mean YJ? as in a Wrangler or JUNK YARD? Are you asking if a GM alternator out of a Firebird will fit an XJ? Are you just randomly looking around the backyard trying to get stuff to fit?

Similar alternators that will fit your XJ will be from vehicles of similar build. Cherokees/Wranglers/Grand Cherokees/Dodge Dakotas but they will have to be of a similar year. This is in NO WAY a gurantee it will have the right pulley/connector/AMP rating....

I think it's best if you went to a salvage yard and picked up a $5 unit from an XJ of similar year. OR go buy a remanufact. unit....they can be had pretty cheap. ($40)

Trying to get some other random alternator to fit could cause major problems since AMP's could be diff, direction of power generation, plugs...including, computer fry, fire....

...oh and welcome to the FORUM!

thanks for the info but just to clear up a few things the only reason i asked about it is I saw that it was a possible upgrade over the 90amp to136. Secondly if u actually look at the rotation of a 89 4.0 to gm 350 alt the rotation is the same. The real question is what modifications u would have to make to the brackets .The plug is no big deal has long has u can read a wiring diagram and connet A to B .

Well done! But you forgot to tell him that all XJ owners are required to watch "2 Girls 1 Cup" before they are allowed to start posting here.

* 1997-1998 Dodge B.Series Van
* 1997-1998 Dodge Dakota
* 1998 Dodge Durango
* 1997-1998 Dodge Ram Pickup

That makes as much sense as going to an Indigo Girls concert and expecting to get laid...

Dude, it would save you A LOT of potential headaches and frustration if you go to the JY (junkyard) and pull an alternator out of an XJ (Cherokee).

...and welcome to the forum~

now.....I have to say this idea has come to mind.....

A GM self exciter alt on the 4.0 cranking out 70-80 amps would be great and could be rebuilt for cheap.

however...personally with the absence of the CEL to be able to tell when something is really wrong, I would only try this on a carb setup.

Also something to keep in mind is that if you go with the bigger alt you may have to remove the bracket and do some grinding to make it fit.

People! We have a problem! You're all recommending Mopar alts! OP has a 1989, that's a GM alt. There are bolt in alternators from similar year Cadillacs that will give higher output, but you would have to grind the brackets to make room. Easiest thing to do is find an alt from a 86-90 4.0 XJ, or an identical one from a GM. You may have to splice the field wires as you mentioned.

This is the one for the renix 4.0 XJ from schucks.

ok if you want more power out of your alternator get one from a ZJ ('93-98 Grand Cherokee) but it needs to have the V8 engine. it will take a little bit of grinding to make it fit but it will take you from 90 amps to like 138 amps.....if you want more info go to the cherokee technical forum and look up this thread: Budget Builds: What junkyard parts will fit an XJ?

Like I just said, a ZJ alt won't work. The ECU regulates the voltage on Mopar alts, and this guy does not have a Mopar alt, he has a Delco alt. You want more amps, you get it from a Cadillac, or a GM truck. You *can* hack an external ford voltage regulator up if you really want to use a Mopar alt, but why bother?

1984-1990 Cherokees have DIFFERENT ACCESSORIES UNDER THE HOOD from 1991 and later Cherokees. AMC was smart, they went with Chevy stuff under the hood, it was cheap, reliable, and plentiful.

DUH......

why did I not notice that.....I guess cause it was a XJ and not a CJ

But its true....The renix motors had Delco Alts instead of Denso.

And to think theres no telling how many of these I have rebuilt.

That guy was able to use a mopar high output alt in a renix using an old dodge voltage regulator. Should be everything you need.
