Thats a good read. Might make this my next mod, from what Ive learned on the past, poly mounts are a cheap mod that give a noticeable improvement on the seat-of-the-pants-o-meter. Not sure why I hadnt thought to jump that up on the priority list...

... probably cause my priority list is already pretty stacked, actually.

Either one is good to go with. You will notice a power gain once they are installed. After I replaced mine there was a huge difference.

^^^ This is encouraging!

BTW - feel free to drop any pointers on the swap out.

Today I got a jump start on revamping the cooling system by getting all the old stuff outta the way:

Not too bad. Worst part IMO was scraping all the old gasket material off the t-stat housing and the spots on the block where that and the water pump goes. Snapped a couple bolts on the driver side of the top mounting "bracket" for the radiator. Figure I'll use a couple self tappers in lieu of them.

I also notched out some metal to give more clearance for the elbow on the tranny cooler line that comes out the bottom driver side of the radiator:

Anyone looking to do this would be wise to get themselves one of these: line disconnector tool set:

Not sure how you disco the tranny cooler line without it.

I cleaned up everything that came out that is going back in, picked up a new 195* oe t-stat and gasket, new upper/lower rad hoses. Waiting on the new oe radiator, fan clutch, and water pump (went with a Bosch oe pump). I'm sure there are some other things I'll have to snag that I've forgotten about.

I also shot the engine bay with Simple Green and hosed it out while I was under the hood:

I would do the motor mounts before you finish putting the radiator in to give yourself more space. I was able to do it myself but it would be nice to have a second set of hands to help.

That's a good point - plenty of room to work in there right now, relatively speaking for an XJ.

Do you have a hoist to lift the engine? Or using brute strength?

No but I have a 3 ton floor jack and blocks.

You don't need a hoist to swap the motor mounts.

I've never done it so I wouldn't know. But I have a hoist so if I was going to swap mounts I'd just do it with the hoist.

Once the new shoes and rock rails are mounted I just might have to give it a shot. Keep up the superb work on the Jeeps!

Got the blue Jeep back in service yesterday.

My uncle dropped by to give me a hand with the motor mounts. This is actually a pretty easy job but you definitely want another set of hands.

Old ones out - really not in bad shape overall:

Driver side in:

...and passenger side:

New t-stat in and housing on; new water pump in:

Getting closer:

I decided to modify the Haynes oe fan clutch and cut the fins off. I just didn't like the way it looked like it was gonna work like a hole saw on my new radiator:

All back together and running:

Temps look good to go:

Drove it around to get a feel for the new motor mounts - HUGE difference. The Brown Dog poly mounts give the rig a better start up and shut down and when you put your foot on the throttle the Jeep responds - no more torqueing from the worn rubber of the original mounts:

Of course - slapped on the new sticker:

........and all the while listened to our Chiefs beat the Titans making them 5 and 0 baby ..................today was a good day...........

until next time............

KC Chiefs are doing great, I only caught a glimpse of the game but I'll have to tune in more next game. Did you order your brown dogs straight from their website? Still waiting on mine, no reply from them... Nice work keeping the Cherokee in top notch shape. Hard work pays off.

Nice, thorough work as usual.

Glad to hear the BrownDog mounts are doing well, still need to get to that. Jeeps looking great, too bad you arent closer to the eastern side of the state over there, im just not all that close to any JF member at all. Wish we could sonehow coordinate a JF XJ section meet n greet/trail ride somehow, itd be sweet to get us all in on the same trails.
