Today I did some random tinkering with the XJ.

First thing I did was address the wobbly center console. The screw mounts inside the cubby were broken off so I used some self tappers, washers, and brackets that I had in the garage to secure it down:

It's not pretty but no more wobble to the console as I'm bouncing through a trail

The next thing I did was put the screws to the seat brackets. Neither the driver nor the passenger had bolts running through the back outboard mount:

So I drilled through the floor board with a pilot on up to a 3/8 bit and bored it out some:

I ran up to the hardware store and got some M10x1.25 flange bolts and nuts:

I sanded the rust down best I could on the driver side and sprayed some Rustoleum on it and after it dried I used some washers I had in the tool box for the underside and topside and bolted the mounts down:

Then I coated the underside bolthead/washer with some rtv:

Once it was good and skinned over I sprayed some rubber undercoating on the underside bolts:

The other thing I did was figure out that the coil spring retainer clip bolt is an M8x1.25 thread bolt. So I cleaned the threads up and hole with a tap/die and resecured the passenger side clip. I used a different bolt I had laying around but I might come back to it and retap with a different size bolt 'cause I'm not convinced this did the trick:

My xj wants to be like your xj when it grows up hahaha. Looks awesome, you picked up a nice jeep. Sorry if you already mentioned it, but did you say what type of gas tank skid plate and receiver hitch it has? Thanks

^^^ I can tell you this thing is a cranky mofo sometimes so I'd be careful what you ask for

The hitch is just a factory hitch I traded my old meats for. Cut the wiring box off of it and cleaned it up.

The fuel tank skid is a Tomken.

It looks really slick, I hope to get that skid one day and also pick up a hitch. Just got out of class, attempted to replace the front coils today. Got one done at the expense of a sway bar link stud snapping and stripping the coil retainer bolt. Fun fun

^^^ I don't even have a front sway bar. You could do what I plan to which is just replace the clip bolt with a larger thread cutting bolt or drill it out and retap it one size bigger.

Well I have no rear bumpstops as of right now

The other day I noticed this:

So I ordered a set of 4+" oe rear bumpstops from Quadratec - at 9 bucks apiece I figured why not. They were delivered yesterday so when I got off shift this morning I took a look at 'em and they're Crown manufactured and seem to be pretty stout quality.

Anyway - went to take the old stops/mounts off and 3 outta the four boltheads snapped right off - easier than a twist off bottle a beer

I attempted to drill 'em out but w/o the bigger jackstands I'd borrowed last week I couldn't support the body to let the axle drop far enough to really get a drill in there.

In my head this was such a simple job In the end I got nothing done.

I mentioned the other day this thing can be a cranky mofo sometimes and today it held up to that

Sorry your snapping bolts like I always am. I went to one hardware store but they didnt have any self tapping bolts large enough, I couldnt believe it. Anyhow, I got both of the front coils replaced with crown HD ones. I see your still running a rear sway bar, you know you can remove it right?

I got the passenger coil reseated/rotated in a better position today. Also redid the retainer clip bolt. Drilled it out and retapped it for an M10x1.25 and put a new bolt to it.

The bolt head is too big and hits the clip on the coil side so it doesn't seat the all the way down but it is tight.

Did you manage to remove the broken bolts?
Had the same issue 3 mo back.....broke a drill bit in one of them . Haven't tackle them yet .
My plan is to punch out the weld nuts with a bfh.

I have a metric tap/die set (Sears Craftsman) that has a 9mmx1.25 in it. I was gonna use this until I went to a couple places and apparently that size bolt is either non-existant or hard to find. Why that size is in the set I don't know but I ended up jumping to an M10x1.25.

Thanks and no - I haven't gotten them out yet. My plan is probably along the same lines as your's - punch or drill the holes out. Then get some 3/16 plate to weld over that spot under the unirail and drill and tap it in order to mount the stops. For now I will be bs-less in the back because I don't have time to mess with it right now.

just drill new holes an inch back from the previous spot, then tap the new holes and put in new bolts.

Do you have to drill it out first or can you just run a larger size tap through it? Il pick up a tap set so I can get this done.
