Looking into a used XJ for wife.

So I have a WJ and looking at a used 2000 XJ for my wife, however what is the average value? The dealer wants $5800, however its a 4DR RWD Sport with 142k, to me this sounds highly over priced. I looked up the value and KBB says its retail is approx $3500. Is there something about the XJs that i dont know about and why dealers think they can jack up the prices? Ive attached the link to the vehicle in question. Any insight would be appreciated.

XJs are a relatively desirable item; however, it's typically the 4WD models that fetch a premium. I'd compare it to other prices in your area to be sure, but it certainly sounds high to me for a 2WD Cherokee.

thats what i was thinking too and it does seem like here in GA the dealerships try and jack up the prices on Jeeps. I mean even 2WD ones here sell for the same price as 4WD ones back home in IL

Too high. Shop Craigslist with the idea that no matter what you will need to do $1000 worth of U joints, brakes, AC, fluids, belts and other maintenance stuff.
At least in GA you will get a rig that doesn't have huge holes rusted in it.

I would shop exclusively for 97-99 XJs. 00-01s can be great and clean but I never want to deal with cracked 0331 head taking out my engine again.

$3500-$4500 should fetch a fine 4x4 with newer tires and a clean interior.

I mean i even my WJ i got used and had to drop about 3k into it with Water pump, radiator, tires, brakes and so on. Well i offered the dealership $3000, now we shall see if they bite. But i will say that in GA people think that the Jeep name brings in the money and it doesnt matter if its 2WD. People still try and sell used YJs for $10k+

Insanity.

I live 6000' from where they were built. XJs funded a lot of cocaine binges in my neighborhood. They're kinda crude for a reason

Offer $3500 and walk away.

http://atlanta.craigslist.org/atl/cto/5179061603.html
$2800 and walk.......

I can find far better deals for myself but this in 3 minutes................

No matter what you choose, make a fair offer and walk.......literally walk away. I have driven away only to have the seller call me to come back and accept my offer.

Never a dealer........ALWAYS 50% more than worth.

You can find a descent 2000 for $2500 if you look hard enough and wait for it. But since this is your wife's DD.........I'll reserve any further suggestion.

" So I am looking at a used 2000 XJ for my wife".......if she's youngish and reasonably fit, that sounds like a fair swap.

XJ Prices are highly geographically dependent, so it's not generally a good idea to ask the forum what a good price is. That would be a fairly normal dealer price in my area, and not far off from a private party price.

However.

Fifteen seconds on Craigslist shows me that $5800 for a 2wd with 140,000+ is absolutely insane in Atlanta.

Well she is 28 and British lol. She is dead set on an American car, since she had Seats her whole time in the UK

Only reason was thinking about a dealer is because they had the XJ on the lot when i brought the WJ in for the safety inspection

5800 for a 2WD is insane anywhere. I wouldn't pay half that unless it was exceptionally clean and had meticulous maintenance records.
