both have the same issues really, they have an lp D30 rather than the hp, they have a coil rail rather than a distributor and wires and the 0331 head casting which has a chance of cracking. those are the biggest issues, but mine is a 2000 and thus far i have seen no problem from any of these things.

tks jerp, wouldn't the head have already been cracked and replaced at 100000 miles?

You can see the 0331 stamping on the between cylinder 3 and 4 by the injectors. If it says TUPY on it, or something else then you're good. Probably wont though.

The head can crack at anytime, especially if overheated.

like I said, the 0331 head has a "chance" of cracking, I guess some people have never had problems with theirs, so you never know. Just hope youre one of the lucky ones if you get an 00 or 01, thats what I am doing until I have the funds for an aftermarket head.

Right after I got my 01 with 107k miles, I did a complete cooling system rebuild just to make sure it did not over heat the dreaded 0331 head, so far so good....
If you buy it, I would recommend doing the same

The head cracking is over hyped, keep up with your cooling system and don't let it over heat and you won't go cracking cylinder heads. The issue with it mainly is that IF something in the system is worn out or on its way out and leads to overheating it has a greater chance at cracking the head then other model years. If the jeep has been well kept I wouldn't hesitate to buy one, just do your normal maintenance with good quality parts and you should be good to go.
