I got to do something incredibly rare today: local wheeling! The results of which? I had a lot of fun and I realized just how bad I need to get a more aggressive tire for my offroad ventures.

Where was this land?

BTW I did a cowl intake on my jeep today, and used your build thread as help. Thanks!

Cool deal on your cowl snorkel! Glad my little bit of info helped. It really works great.

This is at a local Jeep dealership out in Suffolk called Starr Motors. They have a private little playground out back that they open up for club use every once in a while. Sign up at http://www.meetup.com/starr4wdc and come out for the next event! Also, check out the Hampton Roads Jeep Club in my sig.

Dissolved because of management drama. The new group is all the same people except one.

Put new u-joints in the rear tonight and rotated the tires. I'm still feeling some vibes so next up will likely be axle u-joints.

I haven't checked in in a while. In April my amazing indestructible 4.0 led me to park my XJ because of cam shaft issues. It seems the cam bearings have worn allowing play in the camshaft which has destroyed the gears on the camshaft itself and the oil pump driveshaft/camshaft synchronizer.

Today I found a 4.0/AW4/242 out of a 99 with 167,000 miles. $500 for everything including all the accessories, computer, wiring harness, sensors, etc.

It'll be a week or more before I can start the transplant because my garage is full of an antique furniture resto and Dad's garage suffered some storm damage and has subsequently had power disconnected to it. The roofer is ready to start any time and once the roof is fixed, he should have power back shortly there after.

Header panel, radiator, coil rail, air box (cowl snorkel) and battery removed. All hoses, vacuum lines, wires and ground straps undone. All the easy bolts are out of the intake/exhaust manifold. I'll finish the manifold tomorrow and maybe start undoing the bell housing from the block. It's going good though. 2 hours into it so far.

I took an additional pic but for some reason my phone didn't save it.

Tonight, we finished! All that is left is to swap in the new battery and get it inspected.

The best part of tonight was seeing the stats of my resuscitated rig. I have never had oil pressure at warm idle like this.

Dad and I are friendly with a local upholstery shop. He does mechanical work for them from time to time. I've lent them a trailer. I left the Jeep with Dad last night and he took it and got it inspected for me today. After that, he worked a deal for a fresh headliner. Just unbelievable! I have a lot to do tomorrow to "move" back into it as a DD. Starting my list now.

I just realized I never posted my shot of me approaching what justified a cowl snorkel for me.

My setup.

What I was concerned about.

What it was like when I got there.

Although I have had water washing over the hood out on Carova Beach roads...

$40 CraigsList score: 96 XJ springs for my bastard pack and a rear sway bar to hack into bar pin eliminators.

I've got another year left to pay off the XJ, another year left on my JP subscription and now I'm renewed here for another year.

Wire wheel, acetone, primer and paint. Homebrew bar pin eliminators from the free rear sway bar that came with the springs I bought.
