I pulled my rear bumper tonight to install my Grote grommet-mounted reverse lights. Got one cut in and broke the SawZall blade so I called it a night.

For some reason that just makes me so mad when that happens to me... Post some pictures up when you are done.

I drilled holes for the wires in the bottom of the tail lights and then I realized the counter monkeys gave me the wrong pigtails so I couldn't wire anything up. I put the end caps back on because it will be next week before I can get the pigtails exchanged. I would have put the lights closer to the end caps but with my banged-up bumper, I had to move them inwards to get away from the dent and even further so as not to interfere with the mounting bracket. On second thought, being able to pop the light out of the grommet and reach straight in to undo the bolt would make pulling the rear bumper might easier. When I get a new bumper, I'll look into that arrangement.

With the hatch closed, the white license plate was freaking out the camera and everything else came out really dark so this is all I got tonight. I'll try to get some more pics tomorrow.

I think they look better the way Timstock did them but like I said, with my dent this was how it needed to be this time.

Today I made my first trip out to Shoe Creek with VBJO. I got 20 mpg on the way out now that everything's running right. It was 4-door day, apparently, as it was me and 3 JKs. The rest of the gang stayed and camped but to me it was too close to home not to sleep in my own bed tonight. It wasn't an overly-difficult trail but it was a great trail for beginners to hone their skills or for people getting back into it like me to put their rusty wheeling skills back in gear. With no armor, I didn't take the most difficult lines on anything but I was still very happy how my little stocker performed. So much so that I'm rethinking my plans on this build. Well, I'm going back to plan A, which was no lift, some armor and an extra set of tires. I think that's really all I'll ever need and the 31s I've drooled over the last few months would just be overkill.

This was the only decent pic I got today. Hopefully somebody else from the club got some.

My next two mods are going to be...more maintenance. I need u-joints for the front driveshaft and I need a new headliner as mine is sagging in two spots now.

I like where you placed your extra back up lights better that the picture you posted of where you originally wanted them. It looks cleaner. What sliders do you plan to get?

More pics and info from my Grote reverse light installation:

The factory reverse light plug is clearly labeled GRD and MAJOR. Obviously, GRD is your hot wire. (Kidding!)

To make things easy for you: it's a black wire with a green stripe. On each side, I cut it, stripped it, twisted it, soldered it and heat shrunk it to run hot wires to the Grote lights.

For ground, I used the pigtail's round connector with a self-drilling wafer head screw into the body.

The test once everything was wired up.

What everything looked like in the dark.

That's a pretty neat mod you did on the rear reverse lights. I still have yet to figure out all the wiring, just gives me one huge headache. Nice XJ
