Sitting here thinking tonight, I've known I wanted to run 31s on this for some time. Mainly I want 31s because I can get the fake MT/Rs from TreadWright. I love the look of the tire and the tread design is very streetable while giving great traction offroad. I've kept backing down because of the potential for driveline vibes, reduced fuel efficiency and cost of the lift. Having discovered I already had 1.75" spacers up front, to which I added 0.75" now, I'm rethinking things.

I'm not too far from having to get new tires. After building the bastard pack and leveling the front, I'm very comfortable with playing with the suspension on this thing now.

My bastard pack has put me at 2.25" of lift. If I can score some MJ shackles, I'm there. Alternately, I can re-measure the Rough Country adjustable lift shackles I have sitting in my garage. Odds are they'll work to get me the additional 0.75" for free.

Up front I have 2.5" of spacers but only 1.75" of lift, which tells me my stock springs have sagged considerably. I know there are 3" spacers but that will only put me at 2.25" of lift and sitting on a crazy amount of spacers, so I'd want to do new springs. eBay has a pretty good showing with 3" springs running around $120. Shocks are going to be about the same unless I can figure out a cheaper alternative. I'll have to do some research on that.

*Update*

Having done some reading, it looks like I can grab some V8 Grand Cherokee front springs for an extra 1" of lift and a nice ride. $14 each locally and should be available. That will either put me at 2.75" of lift or 3.5", depending on the combination of spacers I use. I need to hit the junkyard anyway and grab another front driveshaft to stick into the Dirtbound Offroad H&T SYE I ordered earlier tonight.

I read that JK shocks work although some say the ride is too firm. Might be worth a try if the price is right.

I put the word out with my local club and got the hook up of all hook ups: 4 like-new JK shocks for free!

Thanks for the kind words. I hope to stop building for a while so I have more time and money to wheel. That was one goal I had for this XJ that I've fallen woefully short on. Replacing the head and engine along with the other issues really set me back but things are changing ahead now.

Tires are the only foreseeable big expense. If you saw the video I posted a page or two back, you can tell how much I'm looking forward to more aggressive meats.

I realized my earlier math was wrong on my lift speculation. These measurements are from the center of the axle to the bottom of the flare:

For 3" of lift, I need to be at 20". I'm at 19" right now at all 4 corners. Subtracting the 2" of spacers I have up front, I'm at 16-3/4" on the stock coil springs, which means they've compressed 3/4" in 12 years. Assuming the GC springs give an inch of the factory ride hight, they would put me at 18" on springs alone, and 21" with the spacers for 3" of lift.

At the rear, stock ride height is 17" I need to be at 20" for 3" of lift. I'm at 19" with stock shackles. I'll throw my Rough Country lift shackles back on for 1" or so of lift. Somewhere between the two slots on the shackle, I'll be close enough. I'm estimating 20" in the rear for 3" of lift. If I need more.

Cost is going to be $40 for front springs plus $15 for the rear brake line. That plus my $70 or so for the bastard pack beats the hell out of $500+ for a lift kit. Granted, free shocks aren't something you can count on but all things considered, this has definitely been the way to go. It's been slow as hell but it's definitely been cheap enough!

Every time I add something here I just shake my head. This whole time, this is supposed to be the XJ that absolutely wasn't going to get lifted.

The real trick is to make sure that once you get that lift all done, you don't get that little voice in your head that starts whispering, "higher, higher."

I guess you can tell from all the used parts and DIY mods that I'm sort of cheapskate, huh? Going higher than 3" starts to cost real money. You find yourself needing an adjustable track bar, new control arms, lower gears and new wheels. I might get there one day but right now the little voice worrying about how we're going to pay for our own wedding next October is way louder than the little voice that wants a bigger Jeep.

Scored a couple good items at the junkyard yesterday. Whatever I don't use, I'll sell. The first thing I grabbed was a Reese trailer hitch. I already have a Kurt, but the design of it has it hanging down pretty low and I always managed to plow a row with it when offroad. The Reese hitch will give me 2" more ground clearance and it's rated for 1,000 lb more than the Kurt hitch - not that I would ever two 6,000 lbs with a 3,000 lb XJ, but whatever.

The existing hitch

The new hitch

I also grabbed a set of MJ shackles. I may use them over the Rough Country shackles when finishing up my lift. I'll see what kind of height I end up needing in the end.

I like this build. I really enjoy the fact that you doing things on a Budget, just as I try an do. Keep up the good work and can't wait to the see the overall product of your Jeep.
