jeep 4.0 engine interchangeability

I am in the process of getting a spare engine for my 2001 cherokee and i am curious which engines or combination of engine blocks will will work with my cylinder head
a. can i use a 97 to 99 block with an 01 head
b. can 97 - 99 complete eng work with 01 coil pack, ignition ,fuel system and computer
c. will an 01 head fit on a 96 and older short block
d. or am i limited to just 00 and 01 engines
e. can i convert the 01 engine set up to an older setup using a 99 or earlier engine.
I understand the 00 and 01 heads are unique to these 2 years and crack if they get hot so i want to get away from this if its at all possible. I also encountered alot of usable 4.0 longblocks in the yards i visited yesterday that are most likely going to scrap, and ide like to grab one or more if i can use em. Any usable help will be very much appreciated.

You can use any block you want. The 2001 head is not as good as the older head so personally if your engine goes, scrap it. Your intake manifold however is one of the best ones. Use the older block and head with your injection, intake manifold, and ignition system and you will be fine. You will also have to move brackets over but thats the easy part.

Thanks a million for the reply. I crosschecked this with clifford performance and they validated your analysis. There is much interchangeability amoungst this engine family. Got some new project prospects as a result of this........ Outstanding

all you are changing is the electrical, with a coil pack change, I don't know why it wouldn't work.

All the 4.0 blocks are pretty much the same.

Rather than worrying about a problem that may not effect you at all, why not just improve your stock cooling system to ensure that it doesn't get hot?
