Well, not to toot my own horn too much, but I just turned 335K on the old 2WD. Been using it for the past 2 months to drive back and forth to work (45 miles each way) but it looks like the water pump is going.

Oh well, slap another one in and drive on!

Mine goes through water pumps like, well, water. I get about 50k from each one before I need to replace it.

Usually the seals start leaking, but last time it seized up and snapped the shaft.

That's pretty much the only systematic weakness I've seen in that engine. 230k for me so far.

50K??? How many have you gone through total and what brand? The one on my 2000 has over 80,000, and it was from Advance Auto. Looks like rockauto.com has a Gates brand for around $24. I put the Gates on my van with zero problems, but both the Gates and the one from AA were new, not re-manufactured. Bottom line that doesn't sound 'typical'.

Out of the jerps in the family with the i6, not one water pump has failed, 150,000+ on all.

200K on my '99 XJ. Replaced radiator, water pump, power steering pump, exhaust (from OE header back), crankshaft seal & harmonic balancer. That's about it for the engine, otherwise also renewed hubs, shocks, brake lines & battery...

To be honest, I'm not sure exactly which brands I've used, although I'm fairly confident they're generally remanufactured. Usually when it happens, I'm on the road hundreds of miles from home, and I end up getting whatever is available to get me going as soon as possible.

It does seem to be a weak link in my system, but fortunately it's not particularly expensive or difficult to replace. I just wish it could be scheduled!
