Horrible spill!
Hey guys.
I'm kind of embarrassed to be posting this, but I can only take so much more of this. So about 8 weeks ago, I was hauling around some junk from my garage to be thrown away. I dump all the stuff into some company's dumpster (thanks!) and am taking a big container of waste oil/transmission fluid/gear oil to be recycled. I had it all stored in this big kitty litter container, sort of like a bucket with a plastic hinged lid. Mistake number 1. As I'm pulling away from dumping all my junk, the container (in the trunk) spills. 5 gallons of vehicular **** EVERYWHERE. (Karma?) So after a VERY long night and many hours of cleaning that up.. the car still smells. I have done everything I can think of. First thing I did was pull the rear carpet and throw it all away. Many hours of degreasing and tons of paper towels later, it is much better, but still there. I even cut out part of the rear seat that got soaked. My question is.. What else can I do? I have used tons of air fresheners, I've kept the windows open for days, I've even spread baking soda all over the inside and vacuumed it up. I am fresh out of ideas. If I need a new rear seat, I'd like to know where I can get one.. because this smell is finally getting to me.

Why in the world didn't you take it to your local auto parts store to be recycled????

That gear oil smell is probably going to be there for a while. I had a friend that spilled a bottle in the back of his TJ. Even after he ripped out the carpet the smell was still there. It was better, but still there.
Good luck. Edit: I just read the part about it getting on the rear seat. Sounds like it's time to start calling junk yards for a new seat.

You might try using some kitty litter with either charcoal or baking soda. Pour it in the trunk covering the bottom where it spilled and grind it in. Then let it sit for several days. The Charcoal/Baking Soda should absorb the smell

My friend got an xj that had been smoked in for 10 years, we used a commercial steam cleaner to clean EVERYTHING. After a solid weekend of cleaning, it had no smell to it at all.

On another board, someone I know was trying to eliminate oders in a car he bought, here were the two most interesting solutions, YMMV.
Get several bags of charcoal briquettes, the kind that isn't soaked in lighter fluid, punch some small holes in them, and leave them in the car for a couple weeks. When you take them out, your stink should be diminished somewhat. Either way, you can still throw a heck of a BBQ party afterward with all that charcoal. I bought a car from a smoker once and nothing I did removed the smell completely, until I used a sanitizing bomb. Just like the flea bombs you set off in a house, these things are a one time use, oder killing explosion. It worked on my car when nothing else would. I have also bought other products from this site and they really do sell top notch professional products. |
