Help 94 Cherokee problems

i just got this 94 jeep cherokee sport which i think is an XJ, correct me if im wrong. i bought it from a guy that bought a new jeep. so the problem is it runs and drives fine for about five minutes then it quits and wont drive any further.the engine is still runnig when this happens and the drive shafts stop spinning. he said maybe the transmission or the torque coverter is out. im new to all this but any information can help.
