Gas tank armor. It may not look as cool as a lifted jeep but that boat anchor in the back of a xj is a big rock target that will leave you calling for a tow. and read as much info as possible on these forums before you make decisions on lifts etc.... I chose to go the cheap lift right out of the gate and didnt listen, all I did was waste that money on parts that were junk. Also there is a good book for the first time xj guy called- High Performance Jeep Cherokee XJ Builders Guide 1984-2001. It covers tons of beginning to intermediate level info that is on these forums in one package.
Welcome to owning a XJ.
Dont worry about that oil spot where you park it. That just means you dont have to change it, just fill it.

If you are gonna do any light, or heavy, wheeling then you need recovery points. I mean like a tow hitch in the rear and d-ring adapters in the front or hooks in the front. All of these can be acquired through new bumpers. I suggest JCR Offroad. After that then probably protection (new rockers, skid plates, etc.). After all that then think about a lift. You could also maybe put 30 or 31 inch tires on the stock rims and stock lift if you really wanted to just to tide you over until you could lift it. Good luck!

As long as your not up north where you have to drive in 4x4 in snow on road a lot, it'd be an easy choice for me. Lunchbox locker in the front.

If I had to start my build all over again thatd be the first thing Id buy before I ever hit the first suspension bolt with PB Blaster. Only part Ive installed that has single handedly made such a huge difference on the trail. Belly, tank skid, and sliders would be next.

As far as free mod, first thing Ive done in ever XJ is flip the rearview mirror upside down.

Daily driver, wheeling? Both? Depends on what you bought the Jeep for.

Free/cheap stuff to start with regardless:
Get rid of the rear swaybar.
H4 headlight upgrade (under $100)
703 or 5.0 Mustang injectors
LED dash bulb replacement

^^^ This.

First thing I'd do regardless is a maintenance overhaul. Fluids, plugs, filters, belt.

It's real. If you rotate them so they're upside down they sit higher for better visibility both from the mirror and from the fact that it's not blocking your vision as much. Really only useful if you're like 6'+ though.

Yeah, 6'3" and same here. It helps big time. Biggest thing that annoys me about newer cars is how much of a blindspot the rear view mirrors create the more manufacturers slope back windshields. Subaru's are especially bad about it other than Foresters. I hate having to test drive them at work because I can't see out of 30% of the windshield without moving my head because the rear view takes up so much room.
