Fabbing XJ bumpers-project OVERKILL

So i rear ended a guy that cut me off on the interstate in my GF's 99 cherokee. It is a moss green xj with stock everything. So bob, my girlfriends dad my dad and i all decided to build a new bumper for this thing. Bob went and got the steel for roughly 250 all together.

We started ou with a 8 ft piece of 2x6 in the quater inch flavor
, along with a 10 ft piece of 1/4 flat steel at 12 inches wide.

First we cut the 2x6 to roughly five foot and gave it some shape

we then set it on the unibody tie ins we made.

Bob also bought some 2x2 piping that we are using to go back to the factory flares

We cut those at an angle to go with the one on the 2x6 and to keep the angle of the factory flares.

We took a piece of flat steel and placed it from the start of the cut on the 2x6 to the end of the 2x2.

We figured ot the angle we wanted our "skirt" at and cut it into the unibody tie in mounts.

This is me doing what i did for probably 3 hours.....

Here is a weld for no reason

Here is one corner all smoothed out
And a bigger one

Bob grinding on the end caps

and some others

and that was the end of saturday.
Start of sunday....

With the skirt on

And that is what i have for now. i havemore pictures that i will upload later. Let me know what yall think

Holy Overkill! How much does that thing weigh? You might need new springs after this is installed!

I would extend those tie in brackets to use more than the three stock holes if it were me. It would be a shame to have such a strong bumper with such a weak mounting point.

http://www.greatlakesxj.com/tech/bumper_mount.pdf These will ensure it stays attached in an accident.

you got hosed on the price of steel.

I got 15 ft of 4'' wide 3/16 plate for 50$
and 12 feet of 3/16 4''x2'' tubing for 54$

For what you have you should have paid about 150.

Either way the bumper looks good, but remember, the bumper is still only as strong as the tin its hooked too, and the stock unibody rails are THIN.

+Karma

why no d ring mounts?
