Hey guys I'm normally on the zj side of things but my dads xj has been having a constant issue with the engine light being on.

First it's a 01 xj with the 4.0 and about 133,000mi. For the last 5 yrs when the registration comes up there would be an error code for an evap leak. First time it was a the gas cap and a few broken tees. This year the same code came up . They took it in for a smoke test and was told it was the evap pump. So they replaced it and still had the same code pop up. They took it to the mechanic and they were told that it was either the CPU or that the cat was bad.

Anyone have any other suggestions? They've basically rebuilt the whole evap system.

What Check Engine Light trouble codes were downloaded ? The Evap System is fairly basic, and competent mechanic, or persistent Jeep owner should be able to find the failed or hose or fitting.

Incompetent, Ignorant, or lazy mechanics always blame the CPU for problems they can't, or won't diagnose. I suggest you find a more skilled and resourceful mechanic. CPU failure is very highly unlikely, and an Evap issues certainly would not cause the CPU to fail.
