Mercedes diesels are a pretty common swap for pretty much anything people want to take offroad. They're a reliable as a 4.0 and have a ton of low end torque. They're expensive as hell and hard to find though. I've seen locked up ones sell for $4k+.

They're pretty common in Sprinters and other delivery trucks. We have a bunch of Sprinters at work with them and they've all got 400-500k+ miles on them.
