I like what your planning. I got a little carried away with my last one too with cutting fenders and replacing body damage. Ended up with a crazy mismatched jeep. I'm currently on the hunt for a new one and have the same thoughts you do. Keeping it somewhat stock looking.

I finally started tearing in to the XJ today.

I have an odd smell that I had thought was just stinky carpets so I went ahead and pulled out the seats, console and then the carpet. My plan was just to shampoo it and let it dry overnight.

Now I've found a much more "fun" issue.
Seems I have some water leaking in around the passenger side floorboard. The underside of the carpet was nice and damp and stinky. I have not had the XJ long enough to have noticed the smell getting worse only after rain ... and who am I kidding, I'm in TX and we've had very little rain.

But anyway...
I've tried a few hose tests and the only consistent way I'm getting water in seems to be if I aim the hose at the climate control motor seal (behind the condenser).

I'm not sure if that is the root cause because it seems pretty unrealistic for that to happen on the street but it is a leak either way.

I also tried blasting the windshield frame and the cowl. No leaks detected from just those but once the water runs off I suspect it gets into the blower motor seal and comes in.

So...
Anyone know if I can get just that seal someplace?
Any write-ups on how to change that unit out I can use as a guide?

In other news,
I also found the rear passenger door lock stopped working. I found this out when I was changing out all the door checks.
I'm close to having enough $ to order my Old Man Emu Suspension I've been eying bu I keep finding all these stupid little things I need to fix.

Fun Fun Fun!

I tried calling around for the blower motor seal and no dice so far.

I did find this thread too:
http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f11/w...rains-1101613/

I may just try some brake cleaner and a bunch of silocone but I hate being messy like that.

So I got it all back together today and have a few pictures to share. I got the carpet shampooed, dried, cut, replaced, changed out all 4 door checks and fixed the latch for my console.

Here is the full gallery:
http://www.lockeduprc.net/misc/1to1/98XJ/pictures/miscbuild/miscbuild1.htm

You can see the progression as I pulled stuff out...

YUCK!

Door check was very misaligned and I replaced all 4...

The source of the water sealed up with silicone.

Decided to cut the carpet into 3 parts so it will be easier if I ever need to take out just one part again.

All better and new floor mats

And for anyone else that has broken their console latch .... I fixed mine with a little piece of styrene, spacers and some small screws. I had to dremel a little off the back of the console lid but it works. Once I find some velcro I'm going to add that to help take some of the lateral stress off.

Yep,
Now all I have to do is remove the front bolts on the seat and loosen the rears and it should come out... may need to loosen the console too.

But either way, at least I won't have to take everything back out again.

I noticed today that my oil pressure gauge is acting funny again.

It's doing exactly what it did before so I'm assuming the el cheapo sending unit I got from O'Reilly is bad. Gave them a call and it's under warranty for 1 year so I will swap that out again asap.
I'm considering getting the Bosch unit they have since it has a lifetime warranty but I'll have to pay a bit more if they will do the swap.

I also read some posts that make it seem like the units at the dealership are of higher quality than anywhere else but I'm not sure if I believe that. If the next one goes bad I may investigate that though.

"and the center console lid is not locking into place..."

My center console doesn't lock either, the female side of the latch is missing. No junkyards around here.

The female side is missing?
Is that possible?

Yeah, just a square hole. The male latch piece drops into the hole fine but when you rest your arm the lid moves a little side to side. It is a very thing but you notice it every time you ride.

Just went back out and looked at it closer. The latch closes fine on back edge of the hole but the hole is bigger than the latch causing the side to side play. I'll fix up something to make it snug.

So anybody know what the white matting under the carpet (passenger side) is?
Not the crap in the bag, I mean the actual thick mat attached to the bottom of the carpet...
http://www.lockeduprc.net/misc/1to1/98XJ/pictures/miscbuild/IMG_1123.jpg

I contacted the folks at stockinteriors.com and they can replace my entire carpet, including the thick matting, but they don't seem to know what the white stuff is.

I'm guessing it is some sort of thermal barrier?

I believe you are correct! Its a heat barrier for the cat. I had to pull my interior once and then had to drive so I just threw in the drivers seat. That spot gets hot! Ah well, pizza was nice and warm when I got home with it!
