Deja Vu? Locked Up's "New" XJ

Here I go again ... :D

Some of you may remember my old 2000 XJ in it's heyday... some may not.

My '00 came with Ecco's, pizza cutters and was black... here it is right after I got it:

It was really in superb condition.

Here is a shot of my "new" '98:

Black ... eccos .... slightly larger pizza cutters ...
It's not in quite as good of condition as my '00 was but after spending a week looking at the local market, this was the nicest one I could find that was reasonably priced.

My '00 XJ became a bit of a beast...

But let me go ahead and tell you that this '98 will not go down that same road. My goal for the '98 is to build a solid daily driver that can double for some fun.

If you recall phase 1 of my old XJ you will recall the 3" lift and 31s:
http://www.lockeduprc.net/misc/1to1/...r/IMG_0106.JPG

And THAT is my exact plan for this XJ. No crazy big lift but enough to tackle some trails and probably a lot more "sleeper" modifications.

My short term shopping list is just a few fix it items. Mostly cosmetic ... I hate the unpainted flares and the sport badges are gonna go. There are a few mechanical things to attend to and a few creature comfort items to address. Some of the paint is not in the best condition so I may be repainting a few things. the roof is especially bad and someone has already redone the hood, cowl & rear hatch but not quite to the anal standards I keep. So any big changes I make in the sort term will be only in an effort to get this 98 to hold up to my standards.

Long term ... 3" Lift, 31's, ARBs and some mild trail armor.
I'll also probably look into some performance enhancements but for the time being, it's just nice to be behind the wheel of another XJ.

Super long term, anything is possible, but since this is going to work as my daily driver for now, I plan on sticking to solid reliability.

i hope this is alot like phillipj's build

Similar ... but for the time being this will need to stay stockish in appearance so no fender cutting and a more mild bumper.

Good to see a fellow "old-timer" back, and back with another XJ.

Congrats.

May i ask what happened to the 00?

LOCKED UP 09-09-2011 06:40 AM

Sold it years ago.

It's purpose was to be a DD as well but I got ... carried away ...
I'm hoping to be a bit wiser with this one. ;)

So far the only real thing "wrong" with it I have found is that the "resume" on the cruise control isn't working. I've yet to search but if anyone has any ideas I'm open to hearing em.

To add to the list ...

I have a loose shock (bar pin), worn control arm bushing and feels/sounds like some play in the u-joint on the drive shaft.
Struts on the rear hatch are dead and the center console lid is not locking into place.
Also missing the door check pin on the passenger front door.

I'll try to do the u-joint asap and will have to start researching shocks, control arms, SYEs, etc...
Other stuff is easy enough to fix.

Sounds like a good plan, I will keep an eye on this one for some ideas. Crawldeded!

Got the oil pressure sending unit replaced, a few bulbs, lift gate supports and a new oil cap.

What I though was a u-joint for the driveshaft must not be .. no slack there. But there is a bit of a thunk/delay I feel in the driveline someplace. I'll get it up on stands this weekend and see what I an find in the back. I'll also double check the clunking in the front end for what I think is a shock.

It's also not really starting that well. I'm hoping it's the battery cables because they look like poo ... it seems to only have slow starts sometimes though. This will require some more research but I went ahead and ordered some battery cables like I had on my 00.

No idea but they were cheap from AutoZone and I'm fairly sure they still carry them.

I got some fancy new floor mats and 4 new door checks ordered. Not sure on the delivery date but I'll be happy to have the doors open & close properly.

My new battery cables arrived this week too.
I should get to put those in this weekend.

In other news, it looks like my TJ is going to be sold this Saturday.
I'm really sad to see it go but I can really use the $ to build up our savings.
A tidbit of it will be "reinvested" into the XJ but only for maintenance items, not modifications....I'm limiting myself to spending money on the XJ mods to the money I make from selling off other toys. So progress on this thing is going to depend on that.... until I hit the lottery anyway.

Boy do I know that feeling. I bought my XJ with a 3" lift and 32's and thought "I'll never have to mod this thing, it's perfect"...

Almost 4 years later, and check my mod list on the left

Why not do a 2.5in lift and flat flares to fit the 31s?

I'm going for a more sleeper/mild look and the flat flares would give it away.;)
