Is Cherokee good for kids?

So here's the deal...

I've got a '97 Cherokee Sport (5 spd, 4.0L, 4x4, 2 door)... and I love it. However, my wife and I are going to have a kid in the near future, and she says it won't do. We need something with four doors and an automatic tranny. I'd like to get another Cherokee (4.0L, 4x4, automatic, 4 door). She's not convinced. She wants something comfortable, but I care about what's under the hood.

Does anyone have any experience with Cherokees and babies? Will new mom be happy with it?

Depending on the condition and the mods to your current jeep I'd just pick up an auto 4 door in good condition.

4dr is a requirement for putting the baby seat in and out of the back seat if you don't want to swear much.

The only downside to the XJ back seat is the lack of latch for easy securing of the carseat and lack of head rests for when they eventually get out of a high back boosterseat.

Both my kids have come home in the back of a 4dr XJ from the hospital, and possibly my third on the way - although the Commander is much classier than a 12 year old modified Cherokee.

If your wife wants a little more comfort have you considered a Grand Cherokee? For what it is worth 4 doors are alot easier with car seats.

With a Baby 4-Doors are a must have !

My wife and I tried the 2door thing with our son for about 4 months, It is a Pain in the *** to get the kid in and out of the back all of the time, We sold our mustang for a 4dr XJ . The rear doors make it so much easier to get our son in and out. I will NEVER use a 2dr vehicle for hauling around a Baby that still in a carseat Remember up until they are 2 they must be in a rear facing car seat, Have fun getting them in with a 2dr vehicle !

I have a 6 month old girl, and the XJ is a perfect all around ride. There are better options for baby hauling, but the XJ does it very well. No problems, no whining, nothing. I'm 6'2" and I find my lift makes it even easier to get her in and out. Wife is 5'2" and has no problems either. However, mines four door. Had a two-door in the pre-daddy days but I don't see it flying too well now. Don't try to tell yourself it will be ok. I did that. And it was ok for a week and I HATED it. 4 door or bust.

Side note: this is the only scenario where I would suggest against a 97+ 2 door ax15 XJ haha

No better family ride, mine is on 7 inches of lift, and 33s. My wife can drive it confidently and my kids love to take it. All three of my kids are convinced they will get one when they turn 16. But I agree with the earlier statement after a few years of car seats, 4 door is the only way to go.

Yep... 4dr Auto with 4.0. These things work great from soccer moms to crawlers when the kids get older and you've got the time to build!

Junk yard, hand me down 21.5" wheel travel front and 11.5" wheel travel in rear with stuffed 33's.

Might seem a little odd please take no offense, but what does your wifes friends drive their kids around in? She may have already made up her mind as to what she wants from watching her friends..
