Can't decide

I am new to this jeep thing. I am in the process of buying my 16 year old son a Jeep Cherokee. We have narrowed it down to 2 in our area. Can you give me some honest opinions on which one would be better?
1998 Jeep Cherokee Classic 4x4 117,000 miles excellent condition $4500
1998 Jeep Cherokee Classic 4x4 190,000 miles good condition $3750
Thanks

ask for maintnece records, at 117k there could be many things that need to be replaced and check for the cracked exhaust manifold as it is very common.

As long as they are 4.0's, the one with 190K miles would not scare me, although I would perfer the one with lower miles. Its all about maintenance though, so If the higher mileage XJ has proof of a oil change every 3k miles then the miles don't mean much for the engine.

Second It would depend on rust. I am not sure where you are, but here in PA cars rust FAST. So the one with no or less rust always wins. Check for the obvious rockers and floor pans.

1998 is a good year, so if you check over basic things and they both seem mechanically sound, then all you have to decide is do you want one in good condition, or excellent condition.

I would not let a cracked manifold scare me away from a otherwise perfect Jeep. The most expensive one that I can think of is the Banks at like $450 or so? and The APN is less then 200 IIRC. Plus its not hard to change.

Offer the first seller 4 grand. If they balk then get the second one.
