Build Thread: Red to Black

Before (Stock):

This past weekend I painted the bottom where the trim used to be:

Close Up:

Today I did the hood (part of it anyway) and the headlight housings and grill.

I know these look like crap, camera on my phone sucks. I'll take some tomorrow with my dads camera if I can get it from him.

Finished Half Today - Front End and Drivers Side

Gonna try and have the entire XJ done by this weekend. Gonna paint everything, including the chrome.

Using Krylon Non Skid Coating. It's similar to bedliner, but much finer.

Nice new color choice

Good call on rattle canning it yourself, I wish more and more that I at least tried it before I turned her over to maaco

Good luck!

Yeah I was going to take it to Maaco. I decided to line where the trim was over the weekend, but I liked the color and how good the liner looks compared to roll on liner that I figured I'd do the whole Jeep. I figure I can't do any worse than the guys at Maaco would.

Just put the grill and headlight housings back on and I gotta say, it looks about a million times better than the chrome ever did. It's too dark to take pics of it right now, but I'll get some up asap tomorrow.

looks good so far. and since you're doing all of it, guess the overspray doesn't matter then at all.

Finished Half Today - 3 cans

My camera phone and overcast do not mix well.

Painting it on the old abandoned highway behind my apartments. They built 288 behind my apartments a couple years ago and theres a like 500 yard section of the old highway that connect to the parking lot and ends at some woods.

Started packing everything back into the Jeep when someone decided to call the cops. Cop pulls up and I didn't see him so I keep tossing all my trash and everything and he draws on me and starts yelling. I drop everything and I'm like wtf. Goes through all the routine police crap. I explain what I'm doing and how I was just tossing the trash in the Jeep since I was about to leave. I offer to let him search the vehicle since I KNOW theres nothing illegal in there. He says no, its fine, apologizes and leaves.

It's the only thing I can't stand about living in the county. No matter what I do I get cops called on me. I have the cops come either to my apartment or back there a couple times a week and every time they do nothing, inform me I'm breaking no laws, and that people keep calling the police.

No idea, my front bumper I painted today is stock and it applied just fine.
I did where the trim used to be last weekend and I've wheeled it and power washed it twice since then and it's held perfectly fine on both. Only time will tell I guess how well it'll hold up.

It's like $4.50 a can at walmart. I've done like half the XJ so far and used 4 cans.

I hate red, and it looks 10 times better irl than these pics. My camera on my phone takes horrible pictures haha.

The ones from when it was red I took at my parents house with their digital camera.
