Blue Waffle Build Thread

Current:

Making a new build thread for my XJ to re-organize it.

Grew up around my dad having multiple cars and working on them with him, when I was about 12 he bought a 99 WJ, then later on in bought an 04 WJ, I was instantly in love with the 04. When I was 18 I traded in my hand me down Mercury Mystique and bought a 93 5.2 ZJ, the thing was immaculate, but it stayed stock until it got totalled by a drunk driver.

My next vehicle was a 96 ZJ 4.0, though I missed the power of the 5.2, this was when the Jeep bug first hit me. It stayed relatively simple, with a 2" budget boost and some cheapo 31s. I started to go over the top with some of the mods and it ended up honestly looking like ****. When the transmission went in June of 2012, I decided I wanted to either get a XJ or find a 5.9 ZJ.

So after about two months of searching, I found the perfect starting point (or so I thought), in retrospect this guy knew absolutely nothing about cars and specifically Jeeps.

3.5" junkyard lift, 33s, 4.0L auto.

Next to my old ZJ before I scrapped her.

This is where **** gets interesting.

Broke a leaf spring while wheeling, and knowing that it was a JY lift. I went all out and ordered different parts for a 6.5" IRO lift on adjustable short arms. The install went fairly well, despite the fact that I had to make sure my buddies had plenty of beer otherwise they wouldn't help me in the 30* weather to get it done.

Rear leafs went on with the only issues being the stupid rear-shackle bushings needed cut out.

After the rear got done, I drove it back to my place to begin to tear into the front. Doing the front wasn't nearly that painful, though after the springs were in I realized the error of my ways, I had forgot to make sure the trackbar was here before I started tearing into it. I ended up having to wait a few days til the TB came in, until then it sat like this:

But eventually the TB was on and I was on the road quickly after.

On a bit of a gamble, I tried calling Logan's Metal Products for one of their front bumpers (I had before to no avail). Luckily Jamie answered and within a few days I met up with her in Pittsburgh and had a winch bumper.

Whatever issues LMP had with customer service before were non-existent, and the bumper itself is incredibly high quality. I would recommend them to anyone, especially if you're in the Pittsburgh area since more often than not Jamie will meet up with you to hand deliver your bumper.

From August 2012 when I bought it, to around the beginning of February 2013.
Also around this time I replaced my crappy skyjacker shocks with Bilstein 5100s, and got my Hack n' Tap SYE from IRO. Oh and I made Jeep's top 5 of the week.

March 2012

With a break in the weather I managed to get my shocks, control arms, and extended brake lines in, I had to replace part of the hard line in the rear for the brakes, but other than that it was a relatively smooth install. Except for having a broken lower control arm mount on the axle side, which I had new ones welded on for $150, so good deal since new mounts cost about $80 themselves.

March/April 2013

Around this time I got new tires. 33x12.50x15 BF Goodrich A/Ts, I wanted KM2s but couldn't swing it. Oh well, I also replaced a few body panels that had rust on them, and started to prep her for new paint (monstaliner), and fixed the little bit of rust that was left on the lower parts of the doors.

I got a mock up of my three color options I had decided on, and obviously ended up going with the blue.

April-May 2013: Paint

Relatively slow bits here, I was waiting for a break in the weather, but when it came I painted my nice silver XJ into a giant eye catch awful blue, forever.

Masking/rust removal

Primer, paint, re-assembly

Monstaliner is another product I will swear by, it's awesome, it's not rough to the touch, and absolutely does not hold dirt. I took it wheeling shortly after this, and mud washed right off and barely stuck on in the first place.

June-August 2013

From this point, I re-did the wiring for all of my lights, and got an ashtray bezel from ebay. 7 rocker switches is all I should ever need, and it looks really nice. I also met some more local jeepers, though unfortunately I didn't get to wheel with any of them at the time. I also pulled all of the interior, welded in a new driver side floor pan, cleaned up the spot rust, and did black monstaliner on the interior in preparation for the Bantam Jeep Festival in Butler, PA.

August 2013 - November 2013

Replaced the steering with V8 ZJ steering, and replaced the trackbar with a beefier Clayton's double shear. In September, my 4.0 blew the #5 piston to pieces, so after much debate I ordered an ATK long block and replaced the engine.

Steering swap:

Engine removal/tear down:

New longblock arrives:

Longblock goes in:

So this is where I'm at now, a new engine and suspension in the past year, and now I'm not sure of where to go from here mod wise. The new engine has definitely got me back into jeeping a bit more, as I was slowly caring less and less about the dumb thing up until that point. Though I guess that's how Jeeps make sure you stay interested in them.

I definitely need to get a welder, and I need to either build or get (weld together kit) sliders/skid plates though. Hopefully I can save up some money over the course of the winter to be able to do most of those things by spring, though I may even get a few of the pre-made skids in the next couple months.

I just realized the serious lack of action/wheeling shots I have in this thread. Kind of sad about this, luckily though I just found out about a close/local club that goes at least once a month. Hoping to get in on their next ride, I missed the one last Sunday. So this will be neat to go. Lots of TJ owners to show up too.

If I condense my thread I have a page and a half of tech. Haha figured I'd wait till my build takes off. It's a baby jeep now! So eh whatever good to see it all in one thread! How's it running now?
