Backspacing Question

I know stock backspacing on a 1989 Jeep Cherokee is 5.25, I am in the market for some wheels with 3' backspacing. I want to get 15X12.50 rims, but I don't know if these will stick out to far? Any ideas?

This can be figured out with a bit of math. The difference between 5.25 and 3 is 2.25. So it will automatically stick that much farther out. If you have stock rims they are probably 7 or 8 inches wide. Lets split the difference and do 7.5. Going to 12.5 inches the difference is 5 inches. Split that in half since the other half of that will be going under the fender. This leaves you with an additional 2.5 inches wider than stock. Add those up and you are 4.75 inches wider than stock at the outside edge of the wheel. Technically I do not guarantee these numbers, but that is what I would expect to see.

12.5" is pretty wide for an XJ rim. You might get better performance from a narrower size.

I mean I had 12.50s on my old xj, but I just wanted to know if the 12.50 along with the 3' backspacing would just look dumb.

12.5" rims on an XJ is probably more unusual than backspacing in the 3-4" range.

The question that I have is what size tire do you want to be running? That would be a pretty important factor in wheel width.

I want to run 33s. I had 12.50X15 rims with 33s but I wanted to backspace my rims so they would stick out further.

XJ's aren't really conducive to tires much wider than 12".

I ran 33 12.5 15 on my 98 XJ (DD) without any issues. Our wheels had 4in bs.

I have 33x12.50x15 KM2 on mine with a 3.75 bs. Rubbing on the passenger LCA when i go to full lock out. Going to add a 1/2" spacer. I like the wider stance look though.

Stock XJ rims are all 5.75" BS. I don't think you can really get a 12.5" wide tire on a 12" wide rim... 10" at the max

Stretched yo!

You can get the tire on, but why, a 12.5" mud/AT tire is made for like a 9" wide wheel. It'll look silly.
