armrest help on 97 XJ

I just bought a '97 XJ as a low budget project(yeah right). The vinyl was pulling out on both armrests on the front doors so I ripped it off and threw it away. I don't like the look of the exposed hard plastic that was underneath so I was wondering if anyone has fabricated a cheap fix or has experience recovering these armrests. After market bolt on ideas are cool too but it doesn't look like these things just pop off to be replaced.

I bet you could make some decent ones out of wood.
