APPLJCK - 1997 Jeep Comanche Work Log - 4.7L Stroker and Exterior/Interior Swap

This my 1997 swapped Comanche. A nearly rust free 1987 Comanche base to work with and a donor Cherokee that had too much damage to go on living. I originally started this over at the Comanche Club, but here is the summarized version up to today.

1987 MJ - Minor surface rust here and there, but otherwise the floors were solid.

The Donor - 1997 XJ, Hit at 55mph~ in the rear quarter panel at an intersection in the left lane, spun 270, and smacked the right fender into the vehicle waiting to make a left turn.

Damn, this thing looks awesome! I'm quite jealous. Always wanted an MJ with XJ pieces on it. :P

I have door removal down to twenty minutes a door.
http://www.nonamestudios.com/uploads...1_12_73053.jpg

None of these were dents. Just small pieces of surface rust that needed ground and then leveled. I am being incredibly picky for a matte finish.

Dam looks good! I wanna do this to an MJ so bad!

20min per door seems a bit nuts though... i have all power and can have both off in under 20min.

but nice job man looks awesome!!!!

VegasGT 09-11-2013 04:08 PM

Im very jealous of this thing, been wanting to update an MJ for some time now. Great work!

MOBBiN 09-11-2013 06:06 PM

I read your whole build on Comanche club a while back. Looking forward to see what's next

The twenty minute per door figure includes stripping every last bit(Glass, trim, inside bits, fishing wiring out) off the door while on the phone with my mother. :D

Now is the time to start! I checked Craigslist every day for years for the perfect candidate with one big priority. No rusty floors or frame!

Next should be primer and olive drab this morning. I need to sand the doors, hood, and cowl cover before I can shoot paint across the front end.

Vassago 09-12-2013 01:32 PM

love this, very jealous

LimeLJ 09-22-2013 08:00 PM

I ran into some issues with my air setup that was causing supply issues at the spray gun. I had to purchase a bunch of parts to get it working correctly.

Primer everywhere! Not sanded yet.

Failed primer on the hood due to poor air flow at the gun. It needs sanded and redone.

I have been slow working on this. The next two weeks are perfect for painting though with temperatures around 75F during the day and evenings.

Flaw Marking - Hashes, need to hard sand away chips/pits. Not shown, slash mark, apply body filler following the mark.
http://www.nonamestudios.com/uploads..._12_216507.jpg

Huh, lacquer thinner should not remove factory paint that easily.
http://www.nonamestudios.com/uploads..._12_163522.jpg

Whoops, apparently paint was blended into this door during a repair and poorly cured acrylic paint was used. That is the VIN sticker. I spent an hour or so extra just cleaning up this paint mess.
http://www.nonamestudios.com/uploads...1_12_87493.jpg

Hood, now in proper primer!

This is my door tree where I grow Cherokee doors. The red color showing means they are starting to ripen.
