So I recently traded my 95 Nissan 240sx that I restored over last winter to get back into a Jeep. As seen from my name, I had a 06 Jeep XK pretty well modded but for some dumb reason got talked into selling it. After building the 240 and driving that around I realized Im just not into the scene anymore, to many low lifes quick to judge and everyone trying to race, made it unenjoyable to take a drive. So I started my search, mainly for a TJ but came across this XJ and decided to take a look. Its a 99 classic, 4.5" lift Skyjacker shocks, adjustable track bar, drop pitman, adjustable control arms, Rustys f/r tube bumpers, few lights!, and 33 KM2s. Previous owner pics..
Instantly realized how much I hated the angry eyes, i swapped for Rampage H4s and harness, a lot better lighting, will be going up in bulbs eventually. I also did some basic maintenance plugs, wires, cap, rotor, air filter, oil, diff fluids as well as front hubs- had to go to 4wheelparts for this. Being that I just moved to Charlotte and in an apartment with no garage I have no tools and no rooms to do work, sucks paying for things to get done. If anyone is in the area and willing to lend a hand let me know, Il buy food/beer whatever!! Here are some pics after I picker her up and some after I cleaned her up..
Eeeww angry eyes!!
Its already a good start. Some things Id like to change which will over time. I had Bushwackers flat flares on its way, the comes sliders and a new manifold as mines cracked. I also plan to swap out the lights for LED light bars both on the front and up to, not really a big fan of the lights. It desperately needs a rear gear and Ill be doing lockers at the time as well, hoping to find someone offering help!! MTRs will be coming soon as well, hate the KM2s! So here it is, been doing lots of researching and watching others threads to get some ideas, its been over a month since I got her, just now decided its time to post up as progress will start after the holidays.
Im coming from a Jeep family, we owned over 20+ ZJs, currently have a 5.9 and 96 5.2- has 268k and clean as a whistle in Fla. Have a decent amount of knowledge but no one knows everything, always looking for insight, recommendation and of course people to wheel with!
Thanks guys, those angry eyes are long gone, its been raining non stop in Charlotte so Ill take some new pics once its clean and has the flares done. Really need to tackle the ujoints that are noisy and causing some great vibes. Wish I had my tools and garage back!
I travel a lot to Charlotte for my car work. I generally work at customers houses doing car work. I would have no issue with bringing some tools down, couldn't provide an area though. But I'll see if I can get a previous customers garage lined up. But if you're down for the trip, I'm up in Amelia VA and am always willing to help out. 30x40 garage with lift and all the tools you need to get any job done, except for gears. Have yet to try those, but will be doing either 4.10's or 4.56's on mine soon enough.
It's about a 3.5 hours drive or so, I almost moved down to Charlotte a couple years ago. But figured I'd respond. Looks like a good starting point, and you're on a good path with it, gears, lockers, and such. Look forward to seeing your progress, and maybe meeting up sometime if I'm down that way soon, which I will be I'm sure.
Thanks man, that'd be awesome. I have no experience with gears either, the whole knowing what amount of shims to put in and everything scares me ahahaha!! Im always down for meeting new people so let me know when youre in town. If it comes down to it Id be willing to make the trip for a good helping hand, at the end of the day Id rather meet Jeep guys and put something towards their pockets rather than a shop.
As far as the Jeep goes, having gotten it the way it is has its advantages and disadvantages. Looks like he upgraded the necessary parts for the lift, which is a plus, but the gears are a must. That and the cracked manifold and ujoints that needs to get down it should run like a top. Then comes the fun stuff, I like to tackle the maintenance first then upgrade as I go.
What kind of fares are you wanting to get, bushwhackers or making your own? And what gears are you wanting to go with? Ever though of just going with a 4.10 4 cylinder set up? Runs about the same as gears and you can have while new refreshed axles. That's what I'm doing at least. But these 3.55s on 33s really isn't too bad in my opinion. I do drive like a grandma though, the bikes are my go fast toys so. But do you know how far from ecu you're? I may be going down that way to hit some junkyards soon.
Im definitely doing 4.56s since I may go to 35s, havent really decided yet. Im not a speed demon in this thing either, but I like Rausch creek and having better gearing for that drive and general easy around town is why its desirable for me. I really want the flat flares, I already bought them but got an out of stock notice, just havent gotten to buy them elsewhere.
Im on the southend of Charlotte, like 2 miles from downtown. Its about 240 miles it says on their website.. Ill be in town until next Thursday, then off to Fla til the 30th. If you're around here before then let me know
