I got it, but I forgot to take my bumper and skid on the way out. Maybe you can bring the skid to Seattle on Saturday. I'll come by some other time and pick up the bumper for my trip to the scrapyard.

Well now that it finally stopped pissing down rain I went out and cleaned up the fenders a little, but the damn wind was still blowing about 30 MPH all day. I probably could have done a seamless job on the flares, but that little bump in the fender would require a calculated measuring job to cut the ends and epoxy them back on just right which I couldn't gather the effort for. I think it looks fine.

Tomorrow is supposed to be sunny, so I may go for a little drive and finally take some pics of bumper.

Rear view of the flares before cutting

You can see how much they hang past; about 8" or so

Ugly spots left over from the stock flare mounting bracket

A quick trim, a little sanding, some nice matched aerosol paint and a splash of clear coat later...

Looks good. Thanks for the pics, I have the same flares and have been considering the cut and fold also. Did you fabe any plugs for the ends of the flares? I suppose you could make something with the pieces you cut off, just to keep mud and such out of them.

How is that IRO steering doing now that you have some miles on it?

Thanks guys.

IRO 1-ton OTK has been great. No dead spots, no tie rod roll, no bump-steer (even without the the stabilizer but I put it back on because what the hell) and it feels just as good if not better than stock. Steering is very smooth and responsive. I haven't beat on it too much off-road yet though, but I try to have a little finesse anyway.

Yep, still free for Sunday. Where were you thinking of going to?

Tahuya? Elbe Hills? What convenient for you?

Both are about the exact same distance...Tahuya is pretty easy while Elbe offers a lot more variety (plus no bridge fare coming back.) I've only ever been out to Elbe once, several years ago in my YJ.

I haven't done anything with them yet and I really didn't even think about mud getting in there. I kept the cut pieces, but for the time being I guess I could just slap some duct tape over them before trail runs.

Looks really good man. I need to get a new pic of mine. I went to 33's, and we were twinsies when you did the flat flares...but then you got the tire carrier... they're still pretty close, but you have taken it up a notch with the steering upgrades, winch, etc. I'm still trying to be the 'bizarro' you with the mirror image RHD version of your XJ.

OR-Fab bumpers, PowerTrax locker,
Sliders, Goodyear Duratrac 33's

It's too bad you're married, we could pick up some Doublemint twins.

I still need a full sized spare, but $200+ is a bit steep and finding a 33x12.50 with more than 10% tread left on craigslist is like looking for a winning lottery ticket in a landfill.

As for the next projects, I'm hoping to line the interior with Monstaliner this spring (but retaining the carpet for the passenger areas) and do some small electrical mods as well as a cowl intake. It's nice to be done with all of the big stuff, physically and financially.
