97 ZJ or 00 XJ?

So this is what the XJ forum looks like lol. I currently have a '97 ZJ 5.2 Limited, full time 4 wheel drive. She's in pretty good shape but had a couple quirks common to ZJs. Today I saw a 00 XJ Sport that caught my eye. 4.0 5 wheel drive with cloth interior. My jeep and this one both have right around 150k miles. The XJ isn't detailed or anything but it's priced pretty low. My question to this side of the fence is, if you could have either one for the same money, which one would you get and why? Thanks.

I do like the back to basics styling of the XJ. I'd just have to be willing to let go of some of the toys the ZJ has.

5 wheel drive is pretty rare and beats 4 wheel every single time. Snatch that up before someone else does. Seriously though, my love of the 4.0 and reliability of the AW4 compared to the Chrysler trannies has me picking the XJ. I love ZJs but could only ever really consider a 93 4.0 auto, a manual, or a 5.9.

Oh wow I put 5 wheel drive. I hate posting with my phone lol. That'd be more useful than the spare just sitting there.

I like the look of ZJs and my friend had a '98 5.2L ZJ for awhile. It was a great Jeep but the trans and AWD transfer case seemed to be the weak points. It had a few of those annoying electrical gremlins that would come and go as well. The 5.2 is a very strong engine.

I like the XJ because it is a bit simpler, and the AW4 transmission is a bulletproof automatic. Some would say as bullet proof as the 4.0L.

The one problem that faces some 2000-2001 Cherokees is the 0331 head. This head is prone to cracking, especially if the engine is overheated. A new beefier head casting will run about $400 and is easy to replace. I did one in a weekend in the thread in my signature.

Good info about the head. The bypass hose blew on my ZJ this morning so that ruins my plans of looking at the XJ again today. I think she's trying to tell me something.

Probably depends on how you use it. I picked the smaller lighter xj bc I spend some time banging down dirt roads. Probably would have chosen the zj for its ride quality if I was usually on road
