96 XJ rear door handles wont work!

So I just traded my honda for this jeep (which i already love) but the rear door handles are brutal. When i push the buttons on each side, nothing.....

any suggestions? i have a little boy and its impossible for him to get the doors open so I really need to address this asap.

Thanks
