85 cherokee

Hi guys, I just wanted to ask I anybody has any experience with the 1985 cherokee? Reliability wise and just it's capability as an off roader. Anything helps. Thank you.

The 4.0 didn't exist in 85, you're getting the crappy v6, crappy 4.2, or crappy rare as hell deisel. Unless there's been a ****load of upgrades done to it I wouldn't waste my time with an 85. No chance of a good motor, no chance of a good rear axle or gearing. At best you're left with a rare pos no ones wants.

From what I've heard the 4.2's weren't horrible motors. They were just an older carbureted version of the 4.0 with a longer stroke. They don't have as much power as the 4.0's but not a horrible motor

4.2? Lets just hope he didn't get stuck with the sluggish 2.8L. i didn't have much luck with that motor in my old S10

I wouldn't even mess with an 85 at all unless it's a diesel. The 2.8 v6 that is in most early xj's is garbage.

They're so many cheap 4.0 cherokees out there I'd opt for one of them or nothing

All 84, 85, and 86 XJs have either the 2.5 4 Cly, Deisel, or 2.8 V6. All suck. The 2.8 model would be perfect for a 350 swap though as its already carborated so not to many wires to begin with.

As far as offroad capable, they are just as capable as any other pre- 91 XJ.

Thanks guys. I found one on Craigslist and was just curious with everybody's experience with them. Seems like a road I don't want to take. I'd love to find a 91-93 but anytime I do people swoop them up in a matter of a day or two. Hopefully ill find my new pride and joy soon.
