$500 96 - rusted floors, rusted roof - pic heavy

i bought this 96 for $500 as a project for my wife to go along with my 98. its a police package, it use to be a sheriff dept jeep, 2wd, I6, 8.25. it runs and drives nicely, drove it 30 miles after i bought it. but it over heats at idle. the mechanical fan bearly turns and the E-fan has only kicked on once. the transmission has delayed shifts, feels like it doesnt go into OD and idles at 1000 rpms. im suspecting the TPS. but i think i got more than i expected with all this rust.

as of right now my plans are to fix the rust and holes, repaint and get it reliable and on the road. Then a bb and 30s to give it a nice stance. no plans on doing a 4wd conversion, already did that on my DD, wouldnt be worth doing it on this heep.

You got your work cut out for you there. Good luck, you must have some real metal working skills.

It happens more than some think. In the north, salt and snow cause rust under a vehical. Down here sun damage, humidity, moisture and lack of maintenance do it to the areas most exposed to the sun. Uv rays and heat will peel the clear coat right off a car without uv protecton.

The holes in the roof let water leak onto the floor causing the floor to rust. But other than the roof and floor, no rust.

The person who painted it was a pro, you can tell by the 4 different shades of white. And the PO did a less than good job putting the windshield in. notice the gap between the a pillar and seal. And then caulked around it. Ill be pulling it tomorrow.

I am even surprised you are trying to save this rust heap.

I dont believe its beyond saving. There are about 4 holes in the floor. The 2 holes in the back are about 8x12. The front pass has 2 small holes the size of a half dollar. Still alot of good metal there. Ill get more pictues when I cut out the bad and clean it up.

The challange is the big hole in the roof. Getting the lines to match up is going to be a pain. I think ill go to the jy and cut that section out of a junker.

Btw i love your MJ build.

It is definitely salvageable with enough work. Those front roof corners are easier to just cut a good section from somewhere to replace. I spent around four hours just carefully grinding rust spots from those corners on the MJ in fear of punching through them.

Nothing wrong with a fixer upper. New roof panels and sections of floor and your good. Looking closely in one pic of a hole in the floor you can see inside the unibody rail and it actually looks to be in nice shape.

Roof does look pretty damn rough but I say press on and keep us posted. One of these days we are going to run out of XJ's to "send to the scrapper."
