'99 could have either HP or LP, depending upon how late in theyear it was made. It could also have either the 8.25 of D35, depending upon if it has ABS or not (ABS=D35).

Yeah, the ones i've all found have ABS. I found a 1999 limited that looks good in the pictures, i'll have to check it out and see if it has the hp or lp dana 30.

GC has an aluminum axle in the rear. Useless for offroad, and more prone to leaks and bearing problems. I would get it though. I like the look of the ZJ lifted more than a XJ. If you are just doing a small lift it should be fine. Just reinforce the frame at the track bar mounts and the Control Arm mounts.

Well, I came from the Mopar world first, so I think the 5.9 LA-block v8 is one of the best engines ever made. But not enough better than the 4.0 to make me want to feed one right now :-/ A 5.2 can get decent mileage, but the long stroke on a 5.9 pretty much means its stuck in the mid-teens at best.

I've gained a new respect for the 4.0/5-speed combo in my lightweight, simple, fun little 99 XJ, and wouldn't give it up for a luxo'd-up Grand Cherokee at all, 5.9, 5.2, or even a Hemi. OK, well maybe a Hemi....

Either one is a great vehicle, but if you're looking for cheap to own and operate, the XJ/4.0 combo is cheaper.
