2001 XJ Build Thread

About a year and a half ago, I moved to Colorado and purchased a 2001 XJ Sport with approx. 120,000 miles.

It had some issues, but I got a good deal, so I took a chance.

Here's what it looked like when I got it and after I tinted the windows (Good alternative to poor AC).

I've done a lot of maintenance on it that should have been done by the previous owner. Now, it has about 133k miles and is ready to lift. I'll post what has been done and what I plan to do.

Like I said, the Jeep needed some work. Here'a list of what I had done in addition to the normal oil changes, air filter, etc.

- Brand New General Grabber Tires (MUCH needed as prior tires were basically bald and I drive into the mountains quite a bit)
- Replaced Valve Cover Gasket (05/2013)
- Replaced Serpentine Belt (05/2013)
- Replaced (LF) Wheel Bearing (05/2013)
- Replaced Broken Hose for Charcoal Canister (05/2013)
- Replaced All four Shocks (cheapos) (05/2013)
- Replaced Alternator (07/2013)
- Replaced Oil Pressure Switch/Oil Sending Unit (01/2014)
- Complete Tune Up - Engine Coil, Spark plugs, PCV valves & grommets, etc. (01/2014)
- Replaced Starter (03/2013)
- Replaced Rear Main Seal and Oil Pan Gasket (8/2014)

Extras
- Aftermarket KENWOOD CD/MP3 player with remote
- Tinted Windows (15% tint)
- Snowboard roof rack

I ended up grabbing a few random trim pieces, etc. from the junk yard. I also needed a new grommet for the rear windshield wiper so I could connect the washer fluid hose. I found these very hard to find online and ended up picking one up on CL, randomly from a rear hatch.

I thoroughly cleaned the interior. It was pretty dirty with quite a bit of dog hair in the carpet. I found that a pumice stone works wonders on getting pet hair out of your carpet. I ended up removing most of the dash and trim as there was a ton of dust/dirt all over and smelled musty. It's now pretty clean.

Went to Lake McConaughy in Nebraska for a camping trip this summer and ended up doing a little wheelin' through the sand/mud. Although the leaf springs are flat, it handled pretty well. Here's a pic of what every Jeep should look like here and there:

I recently ended up removing all of the bumper end caps, cleaning them and painting them with Dupli-Color Trim Paint from Advance Auto. Start with one can, it should do the trick. They were pretty easy to remove, however the front end caps were attached with a few metal rivets. I ended up drilling them out and replacing them with plastic rivets (bought a cheap, $15 rivet gun from HF) after I cleaned and painted them. They look really sharp and were an easy upgrade.

In addition, I removed the side/door trim as all the pieces were pretty faded and I didn't feel like trying to paint those (I actually think it looks much better without them, now). Removing the trim wasn't nearly as easy as the end caps. You have to spend a decent amount of time trying to remove the adhesive tape/glue that held the trim to the Jeep.

New Rear Axle

Since my current rear axle (D35) seems to be making a slight grinding noise, I decided that I'm going to upgrade to the Chrysler 8.25 (29 spline) instead of fixing.

I found this little gem (it came from a 2000 XJ) on CL from a fellow Jeeper (He just upgraded to the Ford 8.8):

I'm going to get it sandblasted within the next week and then will be priming/painting it.

I now have a planned lift date of 10/25. SUPER EXCITED. Here's a quick summary of my build plan.

- Swap out D35 for C8.25
- 3.5" RE Super-Ride Short Arm Lift Kit with Rear Leaf Springs
- Bilstein Shocks
- RE Adjustable Track Bar
- SYE and driveshaft
- New rims and 31" tires (This will be about a month after the lift)

I was going to do a drum to disc brake swap/upgrade in the rear, but am going to hold off for the time being. My current build plan is already adding up quick!

Thanks, Jeff! I just dropped the 8.25 off at the sandblaster. Things are finally coming together.

Just picked my rear axle up from the sandblaster. Isn't she pretty? Going to start priming/painting this week, sometime.

I also ordered a lot of my parts for the lift. Things are finally coming together. Except for my wallet, that is...

Here's a list of what I ordered today. Should have everything in about a week.

- 3.5" RE lift kit
- (4) Bilstein shocks
- Advance Adaptors SYE kit
- Adjustable track bar
- Steering stabilizer

Christmas Came Early!

Just picked up most of my parts. If you live in CO, I highly recommend Chris from The Edge Automotive. He was super helpful and got me a great deal.

Can't wait for everything to be installed.
