2000 XJ Led Gauges

I have a 2000 Xj 2 door with the gauge cluster that consists of the Gas tank and Mph and have the idiot lights for everything else, you know what i'm talkin about? I want to put blue led's in so it matches my stereo but i was wondering if the gauges themselves are just colored plastic with a regular bulb backlight its kinda what it looks like since the mph and kmh numbers are so close yet mph is green and kmh is orange. If anyone with this plain dash set up has done the leds before how did it go? i dont want to pull it all apart to find out i cant do it. Also how can a jeep come without Rpm's lol i wish i knew what rpm's i was at when rippin thru mudholes. :2thumbsup:

why not go to a junk yard and get a full cluster, its a drop in replacement for the SE cluster, you'll also need the oil pressure sensor and the coolant temp sensor from an XJ with the full cluster. Then put LED's in that one.

Would I get rpm's if I put a different cluster in?

yes

I think the 97+ are good to go without changing the sensors.

Does anyone know the point of the SE cluster? Does that mean my jeeps a SE lol cuz I thought it was just Plain Jane xj? And I'm for sure gonna get a new cluster :D

The only point was to save money. Some people don't need full gauges and could use that to save a couple bucks. And the model doesn't matter much in terms of what you get. You could go in and get whatever you wanted at the dealership depending on what you wanted to pay. My 96 Classic came with idiot lights but my buddies came with full gauges.

no, its just called the SE cluster cause it was standard edition gear, the base model gauge cluster. Different trim levels got nicer clusters unless you spec'd the SE one at the dealer.

White LED's will give a light blueish tint to the cluster, blue will give....well blue. There are many threads on converting, just have to search.

If i have the oil and temp idiot light wouldnt that mean i have those sensors?

Also would it be alright if i tried one of my buddies 2000 xj full gauges in mine just to see if it all worked?

yo frank we could put the gauge cluster on in my garage. Than once were done we could take our jeeps up the widow maker trail and let them eat through the mud holes.

bmtcdhs 01-25-2011 08:06 PM

yea mike sounds good, i'll bring my kero burner too if its soon, when i'm lettin her eat i wanna know my rpm's and this sounds like a simple plug n play swap

it wouldn't hurt to try the swap, one odd thing about swapping clusters is that it swaps the mileage with it, so you'll need to know the exact mileage on the new and old cluster when they are swapped, record this somewhere, you'll need both readings and a bit of math if you ever sell the vehicle or transfer the title.

gbp4brettfavre 01-25-2011 08:14 PM

ya that would be good if it was a simple swap. it would make your life alot easier. we will invite chris over to so we can talk more about our custom fabrication business

bmtcdhs 01-25-2011 08:36 PM

chriskeenan i'm definitly goin to try this, a local u pull it has $22 instrument clusters, good deal if it works and i will make sure to record both mileages but i doubt i'll ever sell it i like it too much
