1998 Jeep Cherokee A/C Isue

I have a 1998 Jeep Cherokee and the A/C is fully charged and works perfect at times. Sometimes when I turn it on it will not come on at all and other
times it will turn on and work perfectly. When it is on the compressor is working and it is blowing cold air and if I switch it to vent and the compressor
shuts off and i switch it back to A/C the compressor will not turn back on again. If i let it sit for a period of time it will come back on and run great.
Any help would be appreciated.
