1991 XJ Good Deal?

Hey guys, I had a 97 xj many years ago and loved it. Sometimes I wish I never would have sold it. I currently am looking for an xj cheap that I can work on as my wallet allows. I don't want a piece of junk and so far in the price range I have been looking in I have seen absolute JUNK! I want something for hunting and minor 4 wheeling as well as being road worthy.

I found a 91 yesterday that the guy was originally asking $1600 for. At the time that I saw it he dropped his price to $1400. I was impressed when I saw it, for a 91, the interior was in pretty good shape. Everything seems to work as far as windows and door locks, has a cd player and is in pretty good shape. It has 197k miles on it, a paint job was done at some point and is probably better then the stock paint job would have looked but it's cheap and not very good. (Don't really care about the paint) Over all it's a straight body too. I can tell it needs some steering work done, it's a little sloppy and the brakes go to the floor. AC doesn't work, 4wd works good, and it needs tires. After I drove it I let it idle in the 85 degree weather for a little while and it started getting hot. It was find while driving but not while idling for a few min.

First off, I can get this jeep for $1000. With it heating up at Idle, and needing new tires is this a good deal? What do you think I would need to do first to find out why it's heating up at idle?
Good to be back to the Forum!

With CA cars you shouldn't have to worry too much about rust, which is great. That said, if the brake pedal is hitting the floor, assume it will need a full overhaul of brake system. You don't know if its a wheel cylinder or the master, and if its got ABS, thats another world of hurt. Now, you know most of that can be fixed on the cheap if you do it yourself and the ABS can be bypassed should you want to, the seller may not know, so there is a way to bargain. Without seeing a pic and going by description, I'd say $600-800 is what I would offer. But its all up to what you are willing to spend and how low the seller is willing to go.

Ok sounds good, thanks for the info. That is the range I was thinking. He already told me that he would take $800, only reason I said $1000 was because the tags are due next month. I can probably get him down another $100 and then that would be a good price for it I believe.

Make sure it passes smog before you hand over cash.

Overheating at idle could be as simple as missing fan shroud, worn clutch fan, or aux fan not kicking on. All cheap and simple. I say go for it.

The shroud appeared to be in tact and the aux. fan was on so I believe those are fine. I'm going to take a second look at it today after work. What is the best way to tell if the fan clutch is worn out?

Try to spin the mech fan after the Jeep is up to operating temp, it should have noticeable restistance. If it pretty much free spins itll need replacement. Theres a number of other things that play a role in the overheating, but seeing as how it runs cool down the road but not at idle, its likely not getting enough airflow from the fan.

I would have a mechanic look at it and get a list of what it needs. There are many jeeps out there and it's not going to be worth jumping in to one that might need more work than it's worth.
